I just bought this external dvd burner on ebay (my computer's internal is broken.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...2400&rd=1&rd=1
http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/drx530uldwn.htm

I have at my house the COMP USA's DVD+R 4x discs. Would I be able to succesfully burn my iso of warioware or trauma center?

Can this dvd burner burn at 4x / 6x or is the 8x the lowest it can go (im computer stupid)with my comp usa cds.

Also can someone point for me a good solder guide for wiikey? Or they can just answer my Q's here.
-Is flux necessary?
-Will the iron fry the board? (30 ww)
- The wiikey's joints are very small, how can I apply solder?

I can answer your questions on the Sony DRX-530UL burner  ..

the burn speeds of your drive are as follows  ...

Quote

Single Layer(4.7GB) write speeds
1x (CLV) = about 58 minutes
2x (CLV) = about 29 minutes
2.4x (CLV) = about 24 minutes
4x (CLV) = about 14.5 minutes
6x (CLV/ZCLV) = about 10-12 minutes
8x (PCAV/ZCLV) = about 8-10 minutes
12x (PCAV/ZCLV) = about 6.5-7.5 minutes
16x (CAV/ZCLV) = about 6-7 minutes

Dual/Double Layer(8.5GB) write speeds
1x CLV = about 105 minutes
2.4x CLV = about 44 minutes
4x CLV = about 27 minutes

Single Layer (4.7GB) read speeds
1x read speed is 1.321MB/s = ~56 minutes
6x CAV (avg. ~4x) read speed is max 7.93MB/s = ~14 minutes
8x CAV (avg. ~6x) read speed is max 10.57MB/s = ~10 minutes
12x CAV (avg. ~8x) read speed is max 15.85MB/s = ~7 minutes
16x CAV (avg. ~12x) read speed is max 21.13MB/s = ~5 minutes

DVD Write types
CAV = Constant Angular Velocity, the DVD is written at a constantly increasing speed.
CLV = Constant Linear Velocity, the DVD is written at a constant speed.
ZCLV = Zone Constant Linear Velocity, the DVD is divided into zones. After each zone the write speed is increased.
PCAV = Partial Constant Angular Velocity, the DVD is being written at an increasing speed until a certain speed. After this speed it will not increase anymore.

Connection
Desktop = Standalone desktop DVD Recorder
EIDE = Computer DVD Writer with EIDE/IDE connection
SCSI = Computer DVD Writer with SCSI connection
USB = Computer desktop DVD Writer with USB 2.0 or/and 1.1 connection
FireWire = Computer desktop DVD Writer with IEEE 1394/FireWire/i.Link connection (some standalone desktop dvd recorder supports this also but then it is usually to connect your DV camera to the recorder)

It can burn DVD -R format disks from 1x upto 16x  :)

Although results for good burns may vary with media used some are better than others for most things DVD -R based I tend to use RITEK G05 dye media for all round use games/films/data etc as I find it more reliable and have literally burned thousands of them for work etc :)

Some have had good results from Taiyo Yuden disks too  :)

Rule of the thumb is if you find a good reliable brand then try to stick with them :)

and re:- 30w iron  im no expert but know that 30w maby too hot for fine soldering.

what media was it and what speed was it rated at and what speed did you try burn them at !?

I tend to burn at 4x for most stuff even though my burner can burn at 16x

I stick to 4x for reliablity and readability  :)

Gotrice

What bout the DVR+R whats the slowest it can burn?

vlaflip

i used Philps 2,4 speed max
and Platinum also tryed 2,4 speed

Both say Fuck off i wont burn
with 4,7 single layer dvd no problems @ all

1X  same as -R but ....honestly are you going to burn many +R medias ?!

they are more costly than -R ...  and if its for home video a lot of players will not even read +R media  :)

never had any issues with -R playing back in every player ive tested them on :)

+R failed in a few portable or in car dvd players  and on some ps2 slims and an xbox :(

Try checking them with DVD IDENTIFIER  and see what they really are most poor quality media tends to be CMC (cmc magnetics) MEDIA and which are no doubt the worst media out there in my experience :(

used very few of these due to the fact that most of the time once the data has been written ...immediatly trying to read the data afterwards ..windows shows theres nothing there even though its just been burned seconds earlier   :x

Thanks for the help, I used the floppy disk wires because my radio shack did not carry the 30 gauge wires. I just have 1 last question, The wire after stripped was like many multi wire inside the insulation, I just twisted it and tinned it then solder'd it. Is that fine?
