Whats the best choice for a modchip right now? I remember a while ago that wiikey support died. should i stick with the openwii then?

I would go with OpenWii since they have a DVD upgradeable version that has been proven to work via dvd update and is constantly worked on and updated.

I definitely wouldnt recommend WiiKey.
My theory is there update bricked all their wii's and now they cant find anymore to test there update....

So the openwii can now be placed in the inside of the wii. Are there any instructions on how to build one of these and program it? on the openwii wiki, i looked but did not really understand much. Is there a dummy's guide?

Well you could buy one pre-built and firmware installed for $15. Also Xecuter announced a Wii chip that will run the open source Wiip code.
