$499 60gig PS3 A Limited Time Only?

Well it would seem that the new lower price tag on the 60gig PS3 is only for the short term. Word is that Sony is no longer making the 60gig model and have lowered the price in order to get rid of them and make room for the $599 80gig version.

For anyone who doesn't know the 60gig version has the actual PS2 hardware built into it while the newer 80gig versions have striped out the PS2 hardware and is using emulation like the XboX 360 in order to cut cost. That means the 60gig PS3 version has 100% PS1 and PS2 backward compatibility and the "newer" 80 gig version has about 30% backwards compatibility at the moment.

Better get a $499 60gig (with a real PS2 built in) while you can, cause once there gone, there gone for good and so is that price and PS2 hardware.

No question mark necessary.  This was confirmed by SCEE president David Reeves:

QuoteSCEE president David Reeves has told GamesIndustry.biz that the 60GB PlayStation 3 will no longer be available in the US after stock sells out - which he predicts will occur by the end of the month.

Unbelievable!

Damnit, now i have to go 'n' buy one.

Is Sony just trying to purposefully annoy people with tactics like this?  I want a PS3 eventually, but now if I don't get it before the end of the month, I lose the complete PS1 and PS2 emulation in hardware and the lower price.  So the whole $100 price cut was just a ploy to get rid of stock.  Why should I support a company when they do things like this?

I'd only buy a $399 20gb ps3.  At least then it would be kind of affordable for me

Its just to finishs the stocks.. but after holidays the 80 Gb should drop to 499.. or lower ( if the sales keep in this embarrassing level )

Lol...this funny. I'm not sure Sony knows what to do anymore. I'm sure once the 80GB model doesn't sell, they'll try something else.

And yeah, I think I will wait until after the holidays to get one. The 80GB price will definitely drop(like dudu mentioned). So I might as well wait to get an 80GB at the price the 60GB is now. Sure, the b.c. won't be in it, but I already have a ps2 to play ps2 and ps1 games on. So that isn't a big deal to me at all. Because after all, I'm not buying the newer model just to play the older games.

Yeah, but think of it. If this keeps up we'll have a 2TB model with 20 free games for $599. I'd buy that. :)

Hell yeah. I wouldn't put that past Sony to actually do something like that to move their console. They definitely aren't used to these kind sales from their consoles.

Maybe I will wait, let say...up to a year, after the 80GB model comes out to purchase a ps3. Maybe by then, there will be a model out like you're talking about.

I could definitely wait another year and a half or so to get one. There will be plenty of great 360 and Wii games to keep me busy. :)
