Normal save L+R+A+Select doesn't work in Mario Tennis?

Hi guys. Mario Power Tour Tennis white screens with Real-time save enabled, so I'm forced to use the normal save. I enabled "Saver" when patching the game, and there is a .sav file created.

If I understand it correctly, I'm supposed to save in-game, then press "L+R+A+Select", and a screen should appear to ask me if I want to save or not. That will write the savegame onto the memory card. Is that correct?

No matter how many times I try, I can't get anything to appear after pressing "L+R+A+Select". Am I doing something wrong, or did I patch it wrongly? In other GBA games I've been using L+R+B+Select consistently and I'm good at getting the combo right. The problem is not with my fingers.  :D

What rom are you using? Mine works perfectly, with real time save enabled. Only slowdowns I get are when somebody does a powershot, which lasts 2 seconds.

Nearly all of my songs are made with Fruity Loops, except for one where I used Reason. I recommend looking at my ambient stuff, and staying away from old songs, which are pretty crappy.

I've tried both the US and EUR versions, patched with 2.60.

Ok, on reading some of the faqs I realised that in order for L+R+A+Select to work I need to turn on "Enable Restart" when patching the game. Unfortunately if I do that, the game white screens immediately after loading.

Can I use an older patcher version to make the game work? If my DS is using the 1.8 firmware, will that work with older patchers?

Yes, it should accept the game even if it's patched with an older version of the patcher. I used version 2.58, and if I remember correctly, the Euro rom.
