I agree with the Kaspersky comment, it is the best anti virus out there. Norton gets away with charging an arm and a leg because they USED to be good, but now they have a bloated piece of crap software suit.

Stealing? Where did I say that? I want to use Usenet for legal files! Like pictures of ponies!

I am honored to have made you rofl, Shinster.

But now I feel as though I should contribute to this topic, as all of my posts in it have been off-topic and roughly spam. Well, here it goes:

Hi, Hi, I know not what to say.
Because it's already been said:
they wont take you away.

Thanks for that link- I read it and downloaded "Peerguardian 2" to see what it was like.

Although I'm not doing any P2P or other download stuff, there were a couple of  blocked sites (which are trying to keep check of me) within a few minutes....I'm impressed!

jmr

ive always use protowall & blocklist manger myself http://www.bluetack.co.uk
peerguardian always used to many resources on my computer

plus Methlabs had a lot of trouble a couple of years ago getting the servers highjacked LOL

Having tried to do a few things now, I may remove Peerguardian as it blocked me getting into the BBC homepage!

Opera has also got totally screwed up too- it's stuck on a page "Cawaboom.biz" which appears, from what little I can find out to bee some sort of Trojan (the page is blank though). I can't seem to get rid of it and I have done a scan with Avast Pro, Spybot and AVG anti-spyware but the machine is clean.

Oh well....I would have been fine if I hadn't read this post while eating my lunch.

Couple of contributions here...

First, Norton is pure and simple ass.  There are great alternatives mentioned here, but my picks are the Grisoft line of products - being AVG antivirus and spyware.  Let's get one thing straight - NOTHING catches everything.  NOTHING cleans everything.  The #1 BEST way to combat this stuff is EDUCATION and REDUCTION IN RISK.  Stopping it from coming in is easier than getting rid of it.  Don't use IE.  Don't use Outlook.  Don't download stuff from risky websites (you know, like cracks and warez and porn).  Fact is;  you lose the risky behavior and using swiss-cheese security holed software, you probably won't NEED AV/ASW software or a firewall.

Second, stealing a neighbor's wifi?  Man, karma is just gonna love you. :)

Third, Usenet.  Check this out: http://monroeworld.com/pchelp/usenet/1.php (mods - nothing illegal here - just the facts)  Should answer all your questions.

Finally -- fear is having your line tapped after blueboxing for a year. :)  The 80s ruled.

For modern computing, nothing beats AVG and Newsleecher.   :D

I switched from Symantec Antivirus to AVGFree and had a noticeable increase in overall system speed. When Norton meant Norton Utilities for DOS they kicked ass but those days are long gone and now they are just, well, ass.

I switched from Norton to Avast Pro (for work, the free version at home). I scanned today and it checked 56Gb in less than 15 mins. With Norton it would have been 1-2h.

The only thing wrong with Avast is the continual automatic updates!

I was only traced - never "busted" but I personally knew a couple of people that were.  Those were the old days of trading C64 games to and from Europe.

Funny enough, my girlfriend in Seattle (couple hundred miles away) - I used to call her via blueboxing all the time - called me at work one time, pretending to be an AT&T operator - saying the company was on to me and I should expect a visit from the FBI as well as a full tally bill of all the calls I'd made in the last 8 months.

THAT, my friends, is fear. :)
