The Hypnotist

The first thing I want to say is I looked for all this in FAQs but I just couldn't find it, sorry if I over looked it. Also, I don't expect one person to answer ALL these questions, it would be nice though.

I have a DS lite and I've been wanting a supercard ever since I've seen my friend's supercard. Personally I want it for DS games more than old school stuff, but that's all good. One thing I really wanna do is Homebrew stuff, stuff like DS AIM, Doom, Wolfenstien, Dreamcast VMU and all that jazz. I'm wondering should I get a ragular DS lite supercard with the pass and all that stuff... or pay less and get the supercard rumble. I heard the rumble kinda sucked, and you can't play NES, SNES, etc.  but that's not too big of a deal (but the old games are still pretty cool). The main thing I have to make sure is does the supercard lite rumble support most homebrew stuff? Because in a way $40 is a lot of money, then again, why not go all out, I'll be saving 100s in the long run. I always have some other questions...

About how big is a DS rom? Snes rom? GBA rom? NES rom?

How big are homebrew games like Doom? I really want to get an idea because I wanna know should I get 1 or 2 GBs.

To give you a better idea of knowing what I'm getting and if it will work or not I'm thinking of getting this bundle from realhotstuff.com....

1 X Supercard Lite (microSD)
1 X Superkey
1 X Sandisk 1GB microSD
1 X USB 2.0 SD/miniSD/MMC card reader

or... the same thing with a supercard rumble instead of a supercard lite.

Another questions is, with NDS Roms from a supercard can you still play multi-player with your friends. Meaning if I had Bomberman Land Touch! on my supercard, could my friend play bomberman with me?

Anyways, I know I'm asking so much and I'm sure most of the questions are stupid, but I really apperciate it. What should I do? Thanks!

RIGHT lots of questions.....

As I have Rumble cards I can answer some questions :)

heres a few answers firstly ....RUMBLE can now play snes nes gameboy and a few others too with the latest 1.82 firmware ..but lacks ram so cannot play GBA  not a problem if you dont need GBA,

also it cannot use a few homebrew either due to lack of ram but recent firmware updates means now patching stuff with DLDI you can play more than you could before :)

rumble is a cheaper option most of the time but bundles of other cards evens that cheaper price out now :)

re mem card size if your budget allows go for the 2gb you can never have enough storage space :D

comes in handy when you start messing with MOONSHELL and playing music and videos from your DS,

download play works with some games but not others due to the way SUPERCARD patchs the rom it breaks the RSA wifi signature on the roms so stops the download play transferring/working once transferred  :(

best solution is to bug your mates into getting flash cards lol ;)

or just try download play,

As an alternative you could also try a SLOT 1 solution card as lots of homebrew works with slot 1 cards now too  :)

I have an R4 and they work great no patching of roms before putting them on your card and already has moonshell built in...... (other slot 2 cards you have to install it and yes it works with RUMBLE too :) )

Although bad point is slot 1 cards cannot run GBA :(

for that reason I also have dedicated ezflash 3 gba cards to play gba roms on,

rom sizes vary with ds TRIMMED or UNTRIMMED (trimmed basically gets rid of any unwanted code that was used to pad out the rom to fit the retail cards)

an untrimmed card can be as much as 128mb but trimmed can cut this to half or more and still run fine its upto you if you trim or not,

with SLOT 1 cards you can also trim them with various tools out there.

snes roms are a couple of mb at the most same with other retro systems, and DOOM with the shareware version of doom is about 2mb.

The first question you need to ask yourself is, 'Do I want to run GBA stuff?' And that doesn't necessarily mean GBA games. Some of the better emulators are actually for the GBA and not the DS. If the answer is no get an R4 or a Supercard DS and you're done. If the answer is yes things get a bit more complex. The Supercard SD has some built in emulators, ran most of the homebrew I tried, good DS game support and tolerable GBA game support(some games have slowdown). There are better Slot 2 carts out there but they're pretty expensive and I don't have one to vouch for them.

The combo you picked will work but some GBA games will have slowdown and the Castlevania games might be bitchy depending on what microSD you get.

DS ROMs range from 8MB to 128MB though some can be trimmed to save cart space. Homebrew is usually quite small.

Multiplayer works for situations where everyone has a cart of their own and you connect to each other. Wi-Fi works fine. Download play does not work most of the time.

A 1GB should be fine. If you make sure you get a fast made-in-Japan microSD you'll be able to run more things and there are no 2GB microSDs that are as fast(last I checked anyway)

Ok. That's my input. kkan covered most of it already. Those weren't stupid questions, BTW. They were newb questions but we were all there once. You obviously did enough research to at least know what a Superkey is and that you need one for a Slot-2 cart. Stupid is like: "d00d! how do i play my romz lolz" :)

The Hypnotist

Thanks a lot guys! It's a downer that download play doesn't usually work, is it like for certain games? Here are some games that I plan on getting...

Mario Kart
Diddy Kong Racing
Bomberman Land Touch
Jump Ultimate Superstars

Do any of those work?

I'm still a little confused, the combo that I think I'm picking...

1 X Supercard Lite (microSD)
1 X Superkey
1 X Sandisk 1GB microSD
1 X USB 2.0 SD/miniSD/MMC card reader (all under 100 bucks)

Can I play homebrew on that, stuff like Doom and AIM DS? Can I run, NES, SNES, Gensis, (some) GBA and DS games?

Again I know I'm asking so much, but I really apperiacte the help, and I'll eventually not be a newb... one last question... I made a list of the stuff I want on mys supercard or w/e. Is my combo able to do this. About how much space will this be... how much will I have to cut (assuming I wanted it all on there as one, and yes, I know it won't all fit, beilive me I don't need moft o that stuff, I just need an idea of about how much will fit)...

Supercard DS rom games that I want on my DS in order of priority…

Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon (ENGLISH version)
Bomberman Land Touch
Pokemon Diamond
Jump Ultimate Superstars
Diddy Kong Racing
Big Brain Acedemy
Metroid Prime Hunters
Mario Hoops 3 on 3
Planet Puzzle League
Yu-Gi-Oh World Championship 2007
Snowboard Kids
Metroid Prime Pinball
Mario Kart DS
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time
Bleach DS: Souten ni Kakeru Unmei (this one is really BIG, you don’t have to do it)
Tetris DS
Tony Hawk Downhill Jam
Theme Park
Nintendo DS Lite Browser
Trauma Center: Under the Knife
Elite Beat Agents
Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2 - March of the Minis
Wario: Master of Disguise
Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits
Warioware Touched!

GBA Roms I want on my DS in order of priority…

Classic NES Series (I really want this but don’t stress if you can’t find it)
Mario Tennis: Power Tour
Jet Grind Radio
Final Fantasy VI Advanced
Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country 2
Wario Land 4

Homebrew....

Doom
Wolfesnstien
DS AIM

SNES...

Earthbound
Mario RPG
Batman Forever
Aladdin
Harvest Moon

Sega G...

Comic Zone
Streets of Rage

Shinster

Also I would like to point out that even though download play may not work, multi-cart multiplayer (local wireless) works perfectly. Even if you both have flashcarts or one has a real cart and one has a flashcart.
DS Lite Onyx Black
Supercard Lite
Nintendo Wii (US)
PSP (Metal Gear PO Limited Edition)

ALL DS GAMES OUT SO FAR WORK for SUPERCARD  :) just check the compatibility lists out there  :)

RUNEFACTORY english .....its not out yet so you wont be able to get that yet :)

on the amount of games fitting untrimmed with a 1gb card you will fit average of 20 - 25 games depending on how big they are :)

Trimmed maby 30 or more  :)

you wont play that many at once anyhow and when you get bored you can delete some and add some as and when you want to  :D

you could always get a bigger or second mem card!

as far as I know with GBA games its HIT and MISS with their compability :(

a dedicated GBA cart or the EZ 3 IN 1 is a better option if you really want GBA games :)

SNES stuff HARVEST moon I know after playing to be a bit GLITCHY mario RPG wouldnt load for me ... not sure if thats due to me having a RUMBLE or its just not compatible yet :(

The DS browser  ... you will also need a SLOT 1 FLASH CARD to run it you cannot run it with just a SLOT 2 CARD and a SUPERKEY, (I actually bought it for the kids to use) and to be HONEST its not that great as a browser no FLASH and no SOUND and it being painfully slow are its downfall :(

You should be able to play/use most homebrew stuff like doom and DSAIM etc but ....remembering you also need WIFI internet or a WIFI usb adapter to use ANYTHING wifi play/use to connect to the computers net connection  :)

EDIT: yes I do use a lot of emoticons in my text ... how else do I express emotions in a post ?? :D

It should work fine, yes.  Keep in mind that the only usable Genesis emulator is PicoDriveDS, and it runs without sound, with a forced frameskip, and still runs fairly slowly.  It's playable, but just slow.  Doom and DS AIM and NES and DS should all be perfectly fine.  As was said, GBA sometimes slows down because it's a Supercard.

QuoteClassic NES Series (I really want this but don’t stress if you can’t find it)
Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country 2
I don't think the Classic NES series works with the Supercard (complete guess, I'm not entirely sure), but you'll be able to emulate all of the games using PocketNES or NES DS, so don't worry about that.  The entire DKC series is entirely playable in SNEmulDS, the SNES emulator for the DS, but I don't know how well the GBA ports run.

QuoteEarthbound
Mario RPG
Batman Forever
Aladdin
Harvest Moon
Earthbound I think has random freezes and crashes in the latest version of SNEmulDS.  I believe there's an older version that doesn't crash, but it will be buggier obviously since you're using an older version.  Don't know about Batman Forever, but Aladdin definitely runs well.  Harvest Moon, I'm not sure.  Super Mario RPG unfortunately will most likely never run on the DS, as it uses a special coprocessor chip that is three times faster than the SNES CPU itself, so it's not emulated.

The Hypnotist

Thank you guys so much, another question...

What is this flash key you guys speak of, and what's a superkey, what's the difference? Can a flash key do everything a superkey can? How much does a flash key cost?

And the single card t hing is kinda important to me. My friend has a super card, Bomberman always works single play, but tetris usally doesn't, bomberman land touch never does. Is there a list (or do you guys know what games work and don't work)? Does Mario Kart work, Diddy Kong Racing?

bump?

NO NEED for the bump NOT EVERYONE is on the forum at the same time as you :)

superkey looks like this (image borrowed from sponsors website) :)

this fools the ds to READ from SLOT 2 for ds loading instead of SLOT 1  there are other variants such as passkey etc and all look similar to the superkey and do the same thing ... altho some passkeys are not 100% compatible like the superkey some older PASSKEYS have issues with a splash screen when starting up stopping it working with supercard slot 2 devices :(

price depends where you get it from sometimes you can get them bundled with the supercard :)

The Hypnotist

Ok, cool, so there's no super super key pass or anything, that one you posted the picture of (the one in the bundle I want) will work perfectly?

no theres no super super anything

and yes it will  :)

its designed to work with 100% supercard products by the supercard team  :)

dantheman

It's also the exact same thing as the M3 branded Passcard 3.  The two are the same device with different stickers.

The Max Media Launcher is also known to have good compatibility with many carts.

Devil_Spawn

however some revisions of the max media launcher do not support sleep mode
