Movie file size?

Hey,

I was wondering what the average filesize is for a 2-hour movie. I'm not sure if my memory fails me, but I remember reading that there's 3 different settings (something to the effect of "Good Stuff", "Not-So-Good Stuff", and "Total Crap"). It is rather important for judging what size CF to get.

I know the rule of thumb for CF size is "the more, the sweeter, but not over 2 gigs", but ever since I took an accounting course in college, my mind can't help but find the most efficient and effective cost. That may also have leaked in from Macroeconomics 110. I'd have to open my books up to verify that, and I think doing that should only be last resort.

If someone would fill me in on that, I would be grateful.

P.S. File size should be for video INCLUDING audio.

P.P.S. Don't worry, I'm not an accountant.

I strongly recommend a 1 GB CF card.  Remember, the SuperCard lets you play Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Color (only those that are mono compatible), Game Boy, Sega Master System, Game Gear, and PC Engine games, as well as watch movies, listen to music, and read e-books.  My 1 GB Sandisk Ultra II CF is half full with games (from all of the above platforms), and I don't consider my collection to be enormous (larger than most, I imagine, but nowhere near some people's).

Plus, I believe that a 1 GB card is the best price per MB you can find, as NewEgg has Sandisk Ultra II CFs at 512 MB for ~$53.50, and 1 GB for ~$90 (wow, prices have gone up.  I bought mine for $60 from there about 6 months ago...).

I'm converting Collateral to gbm format now, so I'll tell you how big it is when I'm done (I never wanted to watch movies on my GBA, so I never bothered converting any before now :D).

----------------------------------
EDIT:  Okay, so after converting for around 4 hours, Collateral ends up at 198 MB for the audio and video.  This is converting a DVD-rip (ripped, then compressed to 931 MB using XviD and MP3) of the widescreen version of the film in high quality (which is not as great as it sounds ) for the video and 16:1 mono for the audio.  The video file is 121 MB and the audio file is 76.1 MB.

BTW, Collateral is 5 seconds shy of being 2 hours long, which is why I chose it. :D

Thanks Diablo (I love that game, by the way!)

So as I see it, it's rougly 100 megs per hour. I guess you're right, 1 gig would probably be my best bet. Plus Hopebuy or whatever it's called has the nicely packaged bundle with the memory card reader for a pretty good price.

Sorry for troubling you, and, once again, thanks for the info! It's a world of a help!

Oh, just a minor question... your list had the following: "..., Sega Master System, Game Gear, and PC Engine games,..."

"PC Engine games"... what exactly is that?

What card should I choose, Ultra (faster) or a regular? Which card can you play longer on one recharge, how many hours?

Thanks

Diablo

I doubt the battery life is affected much, especially considering both cards are designed for low power consumption.

As I said in the other topic, I was able to get a little over 4 hours of use (until the orange recharge light on the GBA lit up) out of my SuperCard and GBA with the GBA's light always on.
