I'm looking to get a modchip or of some sort for a PS2 and don't want to spend a lot of money. Can I just get a swap kit and run game burnt to dvd's? Or do I need a HDD or modchip or something. I have an old thick PS2 btw.

DeVS

You can use the swap disc. They run almost as much as a chip though.

personally i would reccomend HDLoader, as this is by far the best solution, improved load times and no disk swappage
however a swap method is fairly good and u aint gonna solder anything wrong with it.

p.s if you live in the uk, i can hook you up with the independance exploit ;)

DeVS

Agree on the solder part. If you don't have bad ass soldering skills you will easily kill your PS2. The swap disc aren't bad, I mean you have to get up to put the disc in anyways, whats 2 extra seconds it takes to swap out the disc when starting a game.

Im in the US. I was also looking for a good site to order from. Preferably it would accept credit cards as I do not use Paypal.

Learn from my experience. Unless you're a bad-ass electronics whiz leave the poor PS2 alone. Even taking it apart will prematurely grey your hair.

There are people you can ship your machine off to who will mod it for you with the chip of your choice for a pretty reasonable price. If you get the right chip you won't ever have to worry about swapping or exploiting or anything. Just put in the burned game and it boots as if it were real. There's something to be said for that.

my friend said that recently he installed a modchip and he had to get his dad to help him. some of the points where so small you had to use a magnifying glass to check if the solder hadnt bridged!

DeVS

Ya it is a SERIOUS task to do. Very small points and VERY hard to do them all right.

That's why i wanted to get a swap disc. To avoid all the soldering. How much would the HDD and all the other necessary parts cost?

Devil_Spawn

for a hdd you will need

1x Maxtor IDE HDD
1x ps2 network adapter
1x HDloader/HDadvance OR the independance exploit (reccomended)

i cant realy estimate prices as i only know the UK cost

kkan

Just to add here that ANY IDE hard drive should work its a stadard IDE interface on the network card :)

it does not have to be MAXTOR  ;)

ive got a maxtor diamondmax 10 in mine & just a copy of HDadvance which i boot with swapmagic :smitten:

but i used to have an old 40GB seagate in years ago but it went up in smoke :'(

Devil_Spawn

you can use MOST hardrives, but maxtor's are guaranteed to work, some are the wrong shape
