Ok, I'll try to answer as best as I can

1. Updating the SCDS1 is a little different than updating your SC MiniSD. The operating system, "OS",  is stored on the microSD card. So all you have to do is download the updated OS and extract it to your card, simple. Upgrading the actual FIRMWARE is like it was on your miniSD. You put the firmware upgrade on the microsd. Load up the SCDS1 and click on the firmware update file.

2. I upgraded my firmware even though I wasn't having any problems. Saving is still working just fine for me.

3. ndsinfo.dat comes with the OS files. But SCDev member Smurf has been keeping it updated. You can find it here: http://www.scdev.org/forum/index.php?topic=10904.0

4. You can use the unhacked web browser with the SCDS1. You have to activate the Browser mode in the menu. Also, you must have a RAM pack, or a slot 2 cart such as your miniSD that has onboard RAM.

I just wanted to add to what 754boy already explained . . .

With DS One it should be safe to install the latest 1.01 firmware and latest OS without worrying about previous versions.

There is no reason to download and use the patch software unless you have a really slow memory card, and then only use it to patch certain problem games. Simply copy the ROMs straight to the memory card. You can enable patch options from within the OS by pressing L+X.

I've had no issues saving with the latest 1.01 firmware. I think the problems that some people are having are hardware related (battery?) issues with a certain batch. I know most people have upgraded without problems including v1 and v2 versions, as well as both the black and white versions.

also the ndsinfodat. thats just like the mini sd one or..

With DS One you copy the ndsinfo.dat to the SHELL folder on the memory card.

With DS one you don't need to use the hacked version of Opera. There is an option in the Supercard menu Other -> Set Supercard to Browser.
