What equipment do I need in order to run PSP, PS1 and N64,  ISOS/Roms?

Is a PSP, a usb cable, and a 2GB memory stick duo enough?

Does the PSP have to be a certain firmware?

Do I even need a UMD?

Thanks.

I am considering getting a slim PSP.

If PSP slim comes with the newest firmware 3.51 you wont be able to downgrade it to run iso' and emus. Any PSP with firmware lower then 3.50 can be downgraded and a custom firmware can then be installed. Custom firmwares have options to run an iso without a UMD but you get better compatibility by having a UMD (any umd even the free demo ones that come with the PSP) in the UMD slot.

2 gigs is enough for anywhere between 2 and probably 3 or 4 games depending on the size of the game and compression. New games are averaging around 800mb after compression. You can use a ripkit to get them even smaller but most of the time ripkits take out audio and some cut scene videos, ect.

Thanks a lot DeVS.  Is it possible that in the future 3.51 firmware can be downgraded?

No one can say for 100% but I would guess at 99% that the answer is yes, lol.

There have been numerous revisions of the PSP that for various reasons have been declared unhackable. As far as I know all PSPs currently on the market are hackable. So they'll all be hacked sooner or later. If the slim does have some new protection on it, though, and it's a good bet it will, it could be a very long time beforethe slim is downgradable. If you want to use homebrew I recommend a regular PSP.

The largest a game can be is 1.8GB and they do run the full range from a few megs to 1.6-1.7GB even compressed. So while a 2GB card will allow you to run any game out there it may still not be enough for you personally. I have been playing both DJ Max Portable and DJ Max Portable 2 each of which are something like 1.3GB and having to delete one to put the other one on was driving me nuts so I got a 4GB stick.

If your system is above a particular firmware(I don't remember the number) you will need Lumines because the necessary exploit is in a Lumines save game.

Wow, thanks for the info Perseid.

I probably won't be gaming much over the next two years , (I'm going to be a freshman in college) so I'll wait for the slim PSP to come out, prices of flash memory to drop and homebrewers to crack the slim PSP's firmware code.  :)  I'm patient!
