Well, I might get a PSP soon and I think upgrading to custom firmware is a good idea. But since I have not even touched a PSP in 2 years, I know absolutly nothing about how to go about this process. Anyone wnat to give me instructions or links? I'd prefer it if I didn't have to go buy batteries and stuff. Thanks

EDIT: I might upgrade it right out of the box, probably gonna get the slim.

Currently any PSP "phat" with firmware 3.50 or less can be downgraded to 1.50 firmware using a HEN exploit and downgrader. After that custom firmware M33 3.52 can be installed. The latest custom firmware M33 3.52 Update #3 can be downloaded HERE.

You can download PSP Firmware 3.50 downgrader HERE. Be sure to read the readme file. This particular HEN exploit requires an original Lumines UMD.  This downgrader is for firmware 3.50 only, which means those wanting to downgrade must upgrade their PSP to 3.50 firmware first. PSP's with firmware 2.71 or less can use Homebrew Enabler (HEN) for firmware 2.71, download HERE, which uses a GIF exploit rather than needing Lumines UMD. There are no HEN exploits and downgraders for use with PSP slim.

Any PSP can run custom firmware including PSP slim.

You can download the latest M33 PSP Slim Custom Firmware 3.60 HERE. Be sure to follow the instructions in the readme.en file. This firmware supports all the features of 3.52 M33 (for PSP phat), except 1.50 kernel support, as that kernel doesn't work properly with PSP slim (hardware problems, screen problems). Many popular homebrew applications have been updated to support 2.XX and above kernels. Custom firmware supports loading PS1 ISO's and PSP CSO's from Pro Duo flash memory by launching them directly from within XMB. Homebrew can also be launched directly from within XMB.  There is no need to install or use DevHook.

To install custom firmware 3.60 for PSP slim requires access to a second PSP phat that is already hacked and running homebrew. You will also need an extra battery and memory stick. The second PSP is used to create a Pandora's-Battery and a Pandora memory stick using the C+D team tools. Pandora's battery is the only method to run custom firmware with PSP slim. You can download the C+D tools to create "Pandora's Battery" HERE. Be sure to follow the instructions in the readme.txt file.

Sorry for the noob question, but I just got my PSP and looking to downgrade my firmware.  How do I know if I have Ta-082 or not?  What is it anyways?

TA-082 is a slightly different version of the PSP phat motherboard.  They used to require a special downgrader, but now all of the latest downgraders are universal and support any PSP phat motherboard versions (TA-079, TA-082, TA-086).

How to identify TA-082 . . .
