a strange charging problem

well i had my ds lite for a little over a year, and over the past few days, i was wondering why my ds was always turning red when i charged it the night before. well today, i was charging it doing the afternoon while i was playing. when i was done playing, i put it to sleep mode, hoping to come back to it later. later on, i realized i had no time to play, so i turned the ds off. but the charging light turned off as well. so i took out the plug and reinserted it. the orange light turned on for a second, then went off again. i knew the battery wasn't fully charged because when i turned on the ds and then put the charger in, the orange light stayed on, for awhile, but would go off later. this would also explain why the battery was dead the day after i charged it.
any insights, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Based on the details you've provided, you will need to replace your battery.
DS Lite Onyx Black
Supercard Lite
Nintendo Wii (US)
PSP (Metal Gear PO Limited Edition)

I already posted at GBAtemp, but what you're reporting is normal.  If the DS is almost fully charged while it's on and you turn the DS off, the charging stops.  As far as I know, this is a normal occurrence.

How about play time?

With the brightest screens you should get around 4 hours.

yeah not a good idea to start recharging again if its already charged once its been disconnected as you could potentially OVER CHARGE IT and damage the battery :(

if you have ever tried, you quickly reach a point where the light goes off half a second after plugging it in

Yea, I'm pretty sure Nintendo had its bases covered because they knew their target audience might not know of the dangers of over charging.

New Nintendo batteries are like $5 on NewEgg.com, so this shouldn't be too hard for anyone to replace. There are batteries sold that promise even longer usage times than the regular batteries, but I never seen a confirmation that they actually work as advertised.

I bought an external battery that works via a USB cable for those long plane rides. Works great.

It's like years afte release and we've still got conflicting opinions on whether DS batteries can be overcharged, uncharged, shouldn't be charged until in the red, etc etc.
If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.
