I see a lot of people buying Kingston SD cards from Japan.
Does the speed of the card matter that much from when you buy one from Europe or the US?

It's where the card is made that's important, not where it's bought.  Specifically, it's the Japanese vs Taiwanese cards, where the Japanese ones are usually faster.  In the past, Japanese-made ones were required for certain games like Castlevania Portrait of Ruin to run correctly, though I understand that the rules are different when dealing with SDHC cards.

Usually the access time of a Taiwanese microsd is a lot higher than a Japanese microsd.
