Also, the Play-Yan has a special chip that helps it decode MGEG better. That's why it looks better. If you want better video, you'd be better off taking a Play-Yan and adding Supercard firmware to it

cant someone build a programm for supercard to run the Mpeg code ? so we would play mpeg without converting ? moonshell did a great job there but still the ouput is to big :(

Cory has been looking into portable mpeg decoders for awhile. You'd still definitely need to convert the videos.

i think it will be very unlikely that we'll see a software decoder for mpeg-4 running on DS.  was cory looking into mpeg4 or some other mpeg codec?   But there is hope, because there are codecs out there that look awesome running directly off the DS chipset.  if you haven't already, check out caiman's video codec (i think that's the spelling).. it's really impressive...

I think he was looking primarily at mpeg-1 (which would still be a huge improvement over the DMV format) but he also talked about looking into ffdshow (which I agree, don't think he'll get working)

You have a link to caiman's site? I'd love to check it out.

it's too bad that it's only for commercially-licensed use.  it would be great to have available for end-users.

check out the Mazinger VS Grendizer download.  it's 24 minutes of great-quality video and only 16MB! [edit] i take that back.. i only looked at a little of it.. didn't realize how much of it is motionless (hence easily compressable).. but still it's a promising codec, and i like the touch screen timeline [/edit]

The O.C. demo is 10 minutes long, and though the framerate is a little sketchy (probably 12 or so), it's not bad considering it's 8 megs or so.  at that rate, a 90 minute movie is only 70+ MB... :)

Koji

Wow... I'm really impressed at this size and the codec has full mpeg4 compliance. Even if this is just 12fps at 16 mb (for the first ideo you mentioned) it's amazing that it's a full 24 minute episode. It'd especially be good if you could up the bit rate a bit more. I wouldn't mind bigger file sizes then that for higher quality.

Maybe we can hope someone leaks a version of the encoder <_<.

Hell, I'd be satisfied with a NDS codec that makes files twice this size even if it was the same quality. Ahh how I long for a good lossless codec

(edit) watching some of the clips now. VERY impressive. I still stand by the fact that I'd settle for something that was even twice as large as long as it was this quality or better.

sneef

me too!  i wouldn't mind sizes up to about 300 megs for a full length movie.
