Are new Silver NDSs be OK for Supercard/Flashme

I just advised my friend to get a couple of NDSs for his kids for Christmas.

He already has Supercards for their GBAs, so ultimately, he just needs to 'Flashme' the Firmware.

But I just had a horrible thought about compatibilities and the new version of the NDS.

How can we find out whether these are the 'old' or 'new' versions?

They are the Silver type, and were bought in the UK last week.

Any info/advice would be appreciated

Unfortunately there is no 100% accurate way other than "suck it and see"

Yeah, I've actually seen a silver DS with new internals that require Passme2 in the wild.  :(

There are no new internals... The hardware is 100% identical. The only difference is what firmware is installed on the DS.

Most new DSes have the newest firmware, but some appear to still be getting the old firmware. This could be because an older manufacturing plant was reopened for holiday sales and they never upgraded to the new firmware before manufacturing... or there are simply numerous plants and a couple of them never updated for some reason.

Simply put though, if you are unsure your best bet is simply to get a passme 2 since it works on the new and old DSes.

Just check the manual. It tells you what firmware it's using on the top-right corner of the manual cover.

Eg. A non-flashed Australian DS will read 'NTR-AUS' and a flashed one will read 'NTR-AUS-2' or something along those lines.

Also sometimes you can tell by the way the DS moves. The new DS's to me seem to 'click' into place better when you open the screen.

At the moment, he has a Supercard and Superpass and the SC is working in GBA mode, but he can't get anything working in NDS mode as he hasn't got an original game.

What would you expect to happen if it was the new Firmware? Would the SC/SuperPass simply not work?

You need an original game to get it to boot with a passme/superpass.

He already knows that. Read his post.

If it's a new firmware, if you put an original game in the super pass you'll only get 2 white screens.

I live in Washington state pretty close to the Redmond headquarters and i still had my warranty(LUCKY ME!!!!) when my nintendo ds didnt want to power on anymore, the only bad thing that came out of this is when i traded my old NDS for a new one they gave me one with the new firmware, i know one that you could check is that WifiMe dosent work with it any more and will just hang at the logo. Now i have to buy a passme2 and have alot of fun!  :D
