I'm a newbie on the DS scene, I'm getting my supercard in a couple of days. I was wondering what's your favorites must have software for the DS. Tell me what I sould be downloading and trying out so I can save some time! I would like a picture viewer, movie player, mp3 player, organiser, web browser, etc... Thanks!

There is no web browser or organizer, but Moonshell covers the rest.

Other useful / neat homebrews include Rain (backup and restore saves from actual carts) and wifilibtest (It doesn't do much now, but it does dect wireless access points, which is interesting.)

I also know of a guy who is writing a homebrew that lets you control the cursor on a Windows machine with the touchscreen on your DS. I don't know much about that one, though.
Manually signing your posts is dumb.

Firmware versioning: Get a Passcard 3, a SuperKey, or a slot-1 flashkit. Then it doesn't matter which firmware you have.

Yep Moonshell covers most of that, read the guide here for how to get movies on

get it from here

ScummVM is a must, SD support should be coming soon, get it from here

theres a version of drugwars for the ds thats pretty good, but i cant remember where i got it.

The best place for ds news is definately

http://forums.gbadev.org

with most home brew apps you will want to get the ds.gba version and rename it to .nds

Good luck!

oh how could i forget SnesDS is still very much a WIP but hopefully itll get updated one day
