G6 Lite First Impressions

I just received my G6 Lite from Hopebuy.  Ordered on Wednesday (paid extra for UPS shipping, I hate DHL...) and it arrived today.  The tracking number they sent me never showed up as valid on the UPS website, but I guess that's okay.

Anyway, the thing shows up, and it looks just like the pictures on all the websites.  Metal can, some foam, GBA size shell, ice blue and enamel navy DS Lite shells, the white G6 lite itself, and the USB reader.

Everything works fine, the thing shows up as a USB Mass Storage Class device in WinXP and the software package is adequate.  It's probably about the same as the SC software, fairly cryptic and odd, but it's reasonably quick.  It copies games to the card while it patches, so that's a bit of a savings in time compared the SC.

DS mode is good, everything seems to work okay.  GBA mode is GREAT, no slowdowns at all or odd button combos for regular saves.  More impressions later.

thanks for your mini-review I am thinking of getting one of these, does the PDA function have English yet?

The supercard can patch and copy games to the card the card. All you have to do it change the outpath to where memory card is.

If you have english PDA functions could you send me your copy (zip'm up :))?
Then I can try if they work on the English G6lite.

Actually, the PDA stuff on mine is all in Chinese.  However, if you delete the PDA folders ("PDA" and "pdaDS") the "My PDA" function on the main menu stops working, which is cool.  Also, the PDA thing has a big (~40MB) file in it for (I think) an audio pronunciation guide for the ENG->CN dictionary.  I don't need it, and it's no loss to me at all.  The GBA Media player seems to work pretty well, but I've only used it for books and pictures so far.  I'll try converting some movies later, but I imagine they play about the same as the regular GBA_MP.  IF they totally suck, I have MoonShell...

So if YOU have the PDA stuff in ENG, let me know and I can try it on my Chinese G6 Lite. :)

lol :), I've only tested out the chineese software (most of it is pretty understandable).
As for the videos, you should convert videos in a bigger size (in the DS screen size) and then use Media :P.

*edit*I can't remember where I have seen it, but in either batchdpg, dpgenc or the GBAMP software I have seen a "anime" button...
*edit2*instead of letting you put a lot of time into this, if you pic the bigger size, you still can't see more video, just the normal GBA screen size.
This is something they should change (shouldn't be to hard).

Couple of questions.

If I don't flash my DS Lite and I don't have a PassKey card, can I just use the G6 Lite to play GBA games?

Also I've read that using flashcarts will drain your battery faster. How many hours does the G6 Lite last just playing GBA games without a PassKey card?

I've never own a flash card so bear with me.

Thanks!

1.  Yes.
2.  I doubt you'll find specific test data on this, but you may see moderately decreased battery life, but nothing major.

NTolerance is right on both counts.  As far as battery drain, my G6 Lite does much better on batteries than my SC CF did.  Granted, I switched to a DS Lite and G6 from DS Phat and SC CF, but I get about an extra 1.5-2 hours playing time on the G6.  I'm getting the typical battery life for the DS Lite (between 12 and 14 hours, I'm on brightness 3.)

A pass key is the easiest way to use any DS flash cart, especially with the added difficulty in flashing the DS Lite.  On the older DS Phat's (mine was a rev 1,) flashing was pretty simple.  I used WiFiMe and my Supercard.  I have a friend with a blue DS Phat, and it can't be flashed using WiFiMe at all.  NTolerance and I both flashed our DS Lites using a PassKey, and it was a bit nerve-wracking to say the least.

I'm going to try different adapters (GBAMP, G6lite SC-SD & everything I might have in the future) and time them how long they work until my DSlite dies when running homebrew (that keeps looping).
Obviously I will try the same homebrew on all hardware :).

Scor

I've been running my G6lite since 11 AM this morning on my DSL, and it is still going strong (though the red lite just came on) so it's running for over 5 hours now.

Scor

Okay it died after 6 hours of continued use.
Testing other kit now :).

Thanks for the answers. Scor, is your test just running the G6 Lite by itself? Also, what brightness are you setting it at? If you are using the passkey 3 at the same time, does it drain the battery twice as fast? I'm seriously thinking about flashing my DS lite, but might just use a passkey if it doesn't change battery life too much. Or, I might just hold off until the ninjaPass solutions get better...

Quote from: "Immortal Ninja"and the lite has just powered down again using flashme with no card in the ds slot:
Time: 4hours 20mins.

So in summary:

These test were carried out using a supercard mini SD on DS lite with full brigthness and full volume through headphones leaving Mario Kart on the tilte screen:

Unflashed Lite - Original cart in DS slot: 5h 10 Mins
Unflashed Lite - SuperKey + Supercard sd: 4h 15 Mins
Flashed Lite - Flashme + cart in DS slot: 4h 24Mins
Flashed Lite - Flashme + empty DS slot: 4h 20 Mins.

So I guess power wise it makes very little difference if you are using flash me or superkey, or if you have a cart in the ds slot while using flashme.

Of course there is still room for differences.
The game wasnt actually played and that might make a difference if the DS slot is accessed, but I dont see why it should....

Thanks for the info NTolerance. Good stuff. Do you have a link that compares M3 with G6?
