Mod/Hack DS Roms?

Dont know if there are any posts relating to this but I was wondering if its possible at all to modify/hack commercial roms.  Lets say Metroid Prime for example, is it possible to hack the rom so you could shoot using the left shoulder button, simple things like that or to more complex things like adding maps or rearranging the touch screen controls completely.

I've heard there are people working on modding Jump superstars translating all the japanese text to english, so it would seem possible to mod other games similarly. I personally love modifying stuff, and I have many ideas of how to use the touch screen better than how many commercial games currently use it. Star fox comes to mind, their method acctually works pretty good but not as good as I could see it working.

Well, translating JSS is basically just editing text files and modding a few graphics. What you're trying to do is modding the actual game code, which is gonna be damned hard to do without the source.

754 is right. I've hacked some text changes into Harvest Moon DS when it first came out and changing text is simple. Well about as simple as you can get without just randomly messing with things. It really only requires a hex editor, a tile editor (most DS games use the same tile system as GBA games, which makes it very easy to edit since tools are already readily available), and patience.

as i posted before in the forum, i think a path to explore should be the one of ROM HACKING through "dumping" (extracting stuff packed in) them with the needed tools, then try to recompile the rom itself with ndstool.

it could allow a far easy way to mod stuff in their native format...even if the re-packing would be a pain in the ass....

of cours if you have to change lilttle thing use a hex editor as Kojy and 754boy have said.

There has to be some rom hacking going on cause theres cheaters on Tetris all the time. I see people on there who get NOTHING but straight pieces. It's like they have the one power up item that gives you all straight pieces for a short while, these guys start off with straight pieces and get nothing but straight pieces.

Yeah, that hack is very annoying. But you're right, someone is hacking roms like crazy. I hope Nintendo starts to implement some type of anti-cheat protection in upcoming games.

Wow, I just looked up some videos on YouTube about the Tetris hack, and WOW, that is just gay.  How do people do that?  Is there more than 1 person who can do it?  If there is, is there like a tool that people are using or is it another public release of a trainer?

Ya here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwhXeR6rpTs  Shit like this is gonna make Nintendo drop the hammer on the rest of us and most likely start some sort of online detection and banning system.

Has anyone actually seen him, I've never seen him.  Is it just one guy?

There have been a few diffrent names seen doing it. Not sure if it's the same person changing names or diffrent people.
