So I decided to go ahead and buy a new psp lite off of ebay and was curious what I needed to do in order to run psp homebrew. Ive experimented quite a bit with the DS homebrew scene but am totally new to psp. I heard its something to do with downgrading the firmware, but i was wondering if i can do that myself or if i really need the pandoras battery. How can I tell what firmware I already have? Also what are some recommended hombrews? thanks guys.

you can look at your current firmware in the settings about section of the psp I think. For the new custom firmwares your going to need a pandora's battery and jigstick that you probably want anyway to prevent bricking.
heres a tutorial

thanks. so im gonna need a pandora's battery and mem stick with the cfw files from online. my next q is can you download these files directly to the memcard via a card reader or do you actually have to have the psp cable to connect to the pc. i heard the pandoras battery cant be used as a reg battery once modified but can you use the "magic mem stick" afterwards as a reg mem stick?

Yes, a Pandora memory stick is created using a PC.

A Pandora battery can be converted back to a regular battery using a PSP running custom firmware and the Open Source Pandora Battery Tool.

In my experience, all of the PSP Slim units released before December of last year still have the ability to create pandora batteries, but the new Slim units do not....the motherboard has been changed not to allow writing to the battery. BUT, they all still can be modded using a pandora battery. And of course, the system had to have been modded to begin with to run the OSPBT to create the battery in the first place. Still, the best bet for a person newly entering the homebrew/modding PSP scene is probably just to pick up a Datel Tool battery...that is if you do not have any access to a modded phat unit or older model slim unit to create a battery on your own. As for the stick, as stated above, you can create one of these with the PC alone without using a PSP at all. I have used that method dozens of times.

is there a tutorial for doing this memstick thing via a memcard reader? or is it as simple as droping the files in a new memcard and booting the psp in firmware mode? cause all the tutorials including the link stated above assumes you actually connect the psp to the pc. thanks
