Don't Update Your Wii!!

Looks like a new update has been released for the Wii (update 3.3U) that disables the Twilight Hack. It will look for and delete the Twilight hack save so you can no longer boot homebrew that way. If you already had the Homebrew Channel installed you will be fine as it does nothing to delete or block it from running homebrew. Trucha signed disc also no longer work as well as the Datel disc. Here is what bushing has to say about it:

QuoteIt’s interesting that Nintendo bothered to update the IOSP timestamp, because the only change I see in IOSP is that the version reported changed (there’s a variable that stores the value “040308″). They’re trying to be clever; the actual bug fix was in ES, where the encryption code lives.

The strncmp signing bug has been fixed in IOS30, which is what the system menu uses. (The new signature-checking code is identical to that in IOS37.) This probably means that it will no longer boot Trucha-signed discs, but I have not yet tried it. Early reports on IRC indicate that the Homebrew Channel still works; this is consistent with my understanding that the system menu does not verify the content of already-installed content.

I don’t know why IOS31 was patched.

Update 2: Okay, now this is just silly. Two functions have been added to the system menu. Guess what they do:

    * ipl::utility::ESMisc::DeleteSavedata( (unsigned long long, EGG::Heap *))
    * ipl::utility::ESMisc::VerifySavedataZD( (unsigned long long, EGG::Heap *))

We Are Not Impressed.

It's best not to update your Wii for the time being and give it a few days and see what comes about with this.

**EDIT**

More info today:

QuoteCongrats to tmbinc and tehpola for finding a combination of two bugs in the code that Nintendo added that â€" when combined â€" allow us to fool their check into ignoring the TP hack. More info will be forthcoming â€" I still wouldn’t rush to update my system, anyway.

This still leaves the issue of how to deal with IOS30; there are several different ways to deal with this â€" some of which have already been released by people â€" and we’ll need to take some time to decide on the best one to use and test it thoroughly. There’s no urgency here, no need to rush into something.

Seems like they already have this fixed, will just take a few days to get it sorted and released. I wouldn't be surprised if the new hack is out by the weekend,lol.

I still won't update until it is 100% fixed and the Wii has the ability to use the hack again. Even if the HB channel works after updating, if you ever format the Wii for some reason after this update you will lose the HB channel and not be able to re-install it....at least as it stands for the moment  ;)

Thanks again for this MUCH important info man!

Judging from the manner in which Nintendo is doing things, I suspect it's going to be Ninty releasing a new firmware update to kill and squash these hacks and hackers finding new ones to exploit.   2funny

Well from the time stamps, they tested this patch for 3 months before releasing and it only took 6hrs to find a work around,lol. Nintendo has an uphill battle ahead of them. I honestly think the main goal was to get rid of the Datel disc since Datel was making money on the hack by selling pressed disc at retail stores.
