I'm looking for both homebrew and commercial releases that can help me learning Japanese. japanesepod101.com is absolutely superb but I want to be learning the hiragana and katakana at the same time as the spoken so...if anyone has any suggestions? :D

GIDZzz

I remember two homebrew apps of such kind. One of them is called Japanese Training and the other Project JDS.
And for commercial releases: Kanji Sonomama Rakubiki Jiten is a huge dictionary with handwriting recognition, including kanji, what makes searching a lot easier. If you're looking for some higarana and katakana practice, I recommend japanese version of Pokemon Diamond/Pearl as it doesn't contain kanji.

ProjectJDS is a great homebrew program, I learned Hiragana entriely through that program. I recommend you go to Japanese classes or get a private tutor if you are keen on Japanese, programs and games are a fun way to practice but they can't teach like a person can.

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=205838 - Japanese Training as mentioned by GIDZzz  - Fantastic program
http://ds.amvhell.com/ - DSlearnJ
http://forja.rediris.es/frs/?group_id=71 - KanaDS - Fantastic program
http://www.projet-ixs.com/post/2007/11/04/apprendre-le-japonais-sur-nintendo-ds - Japanese Academy - In French (only Hiragana practice works for me)
http://dl.qj.net/dl.php?fid=14919 - Project JDS

Hope they help.

Thanks guys I will try these. These are really to be accompanied with Japanesepod101.com, as I can't afford Japanese classes :)

Thanks for all the links  ;), I'm going to try and learn some Japanese so I don't have to wait for Gyakuten Saiban to be translated

lol using just these by themselves wont be enough to play a full game in japanese, at least not anytime soon haha, if you want to learn japanese for that i seriously suggest you take some classes for that as well as use these apps to get the best results
