Curious if it is safe to update your wii if you have a wiikey?

Yes, but 3.3 requires a new version of the twilight hack save file and trucha signed discs will no longer work(although I hear you can boot them with GeckoOS). As far as running backups, though, it is safe.

how do you go about running the geckoOS, as i think i have a few scrubbed discs via trucha (or all they all like that?)

I'd be interested to hear, as far as I knew Scrubbed work ok but Trucha Signed will not (Smash Bros Single layer disk would be a good example).

I didn't know you could still boot them via gcos though!

I've been reluctant to put any homebrew on as I'm concerned it could be detected, and I like to play my wii online :-)

Just what is GeckOS?   ???
Is it the same as GCOS?  :o

I regret posting my update question thread on the other forum.  In case anyone sees this one or the other one... how about 3.0U?  Safe to update?

I've never actually used it myself since I'm still on 3.2U, so I can't be of much help. GeckoOS and GCOS aren't the same thing, though.

Nintendo hasn't yet banned a single person from there Wii-related online services. (NO ONE has been banned, not for homebrew, not for anything.) If they do start, which they almost definitely won't, there's a 99.9% chance they'll ban someone else before they ban you, and you'll hear about it on the internet, and you'll know to purge your Wii of homebrew.

Of course, it's your Wii and your choice, but I thought I'd just point that out.

Oh and BTW, I'm not sure of this, but I think I remember reading you can boot trucha-signed disks using the Mario Kart channel. I believe what you have to do is start the Mario Kart channel, do like you want to race a ghost, and then, when you're asked to "make sure the Mario kart disk is inserted," put in the trucha disk of your choice. Again, I'm not sure if this is true, it may have just been something I dreamed...

Hi: You dream about your Wii, eh? :)

When hackers first figured out how to install hacked VC WADs the technique used allowed you to redownload the official channel from Nintendo's servers as if you paid for it. Nintendo fixed the hole that let you redownload and that's all they did. If they didn't ban for that I can't think of what they would ban for besides cheating.

I dream about hacking things in general, which is even worse.  :P
