Nothing to do with it!

Patents are not disclosed until at least 18 months after filing a PTC application.

If you actually go to the US patent database you will see that this patent was filed on August 8th 2008.

socket

Yeah I didn't take the time to look into it but I had a feeling it was not due to geohot...

You are absolutly correct so it must be unrelated.  Good news then. Hopefully we will see a "Hello World" homebrew sometime soon.

This is the "Hello World" homebrew I've been waiting for. It's the beginning of better things to come. Today geohot posted this on his blog . . .

A whole lot of people are screaming FAKE about this image including people like DARK ALEX of PSP fame so im not so sure!?

Mathieulh says its real.

Yeah, I read that too over at MaxConsole . . .

http://www.maxconsole.net/content.php?38360
Well known PSP hacker and Dark_Alex's right hand man previously 'Mathieulh' has confirmed to us that Geohot's PS3 exclusive is indeed the real deal. He didn't want us to publish exactly why he knows it is the real deal, but let's just say he has some first hand evidence

And more recently . . .

http://www.maxconsole.net/content.php?39185-GeoHot-strikes-again-Creates-custom-PS3-themes
Mathieulh had the following to say about those doubters out there:

It's real, it has nothing to do with custom backgrounds, what he did was replace a rco file in dev_flash with one he edited (with a custom text in it). To do that he had to mount dev_flash as rw because it is normally read only. You can do that if you know how to using his exploit under otheros.

If this is a hoax then it's a pretty elaborate one with geohot and other developers putting their reputation on the line.

Kkan can you please post a link to the comment made by DarkAleX?

It appears geohot has posted a warning on his blog about the PS3 3.21 update coming soon . . .

Don't Update

A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat's Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play...

Two things, some people seem to think CFW will enable some sort of piracy. It won't. It'll just be a custom version of 3.21 that doesn't lose OtherOS support. Hacking isn't about getting what you didn't pay for, it's about making sure you do get what you did.

And this is about more than this feature right now. It's about whether these companies have the right to take away advertised features from a product you purchased. Imagine if an exploit were found in Safari on the iPhone, but instead of fixing it, Apple decides to pull web browsing altogether. Legally, they may be within their right to do so, but we have to show them it's the wrong move for the future of the product and the company.

For now, it looks like proxying the query for new firmwares is working. My investigation into 3.21 has begun.

Well I hope you guys didn't update your PS3 firmware to version 3.21 today because well known hacker emaNyMtoN has done the impossible:

USB Loader for PS3 Drops!

  • Load Blu-ray images from any USB mass-storage device
  • Make BD backups directly to USB storage (no BD-ROM required!)
  • Run PS3 Homebrew and "Other OS" with full RSX support and all 7 SPEs!
  • Works with PS3 firmware v3.15 or lower (v3.21+ support coming soon)
  • No hardware modifications necessary, uses RFoM encryption keys.

How it works:

Thanks to geohot hardware exploit we've been able to reverse engineer the encryption keys used by Resitance: FoM.  With these encryption keys at our disposal we can 'trick' the PS3 into downloading a spoofed PSN update patch for RFoM. This is accomplished by configuring the PS3 Network Settings to connect to a special Proxy Server (Suny) running on a PC. This update doesn't actually patch anything, rather it installs an alias program (Chimera) that loads a boot menu whenever RFoM is launched from XMB. Ta Da!

You are presented with the following options:

X - Start USB Loader
O - Run Other OS (unrestricted)
[] - Launch Resitance: Fall of Man
^ - Return to XMB

Note this exploit does not currently work with PS3 Slim or any PS3 SKUs with official v3.21 firmware or above. An official copy of Resitance: FoM is required.  You also need a Windows PC to run the Proxy Server software.

never used it myself but know at least 20 that do mainly linux for internet etc on their PS3!

Jakob95

Why would they use Linux on there PS3 to go on Internet?  When the PS3 has a built in browser?
