It's not really supercard related but it definatley is a sign of the end for both the GBA's production life and (sorry to say it) but also the DS (IMO). I think this is going to be a PR nightmare for nintendo the likes they haven't seen since the Virtual Boy. Will it be too late for them to penetrate a market that Sony will have such a commanding lead in already?
what does everyone else think? :?:

Yeah, someone else posted the original news story (from the SPOnG website) in another topic.  It's all, IMO, a gross misunderstanding.  There will be a new GBA deputed, I believe, but more like the transition from GBA to GBA SP, not GBC to GBA.

Of course, if all of this is true and does transpire, then I feel Nintendo will soon learn how consumers, and even devote fanboys, do not appreciate such tactics.  The fact that you release a system then, within a few months, release yet another completely different, competing system is ludicrous and absolutely unheard-of.  I know Nintendo may say the DS isn't a competitor to the GBA2, or that they emphatically stated the DS would not be the next generation of the GBA, but it's impossible to truthfully say either.

Firstly, a handheld system will compete with another handheld system.  PERIOD.  That's an absolute no-brainer.  If they're in the same market, they're a competitor.  Want another example?  Windows 98, Windows Millenium Edition, Windows 2000, Windows XP Home Edition, and Window XP Professional Edition are all completitiors in their market as well.  They all serve the same basic service, and most consumers will only purchase one of them at a time.

Secondly, the DS is definitely a successor to the GBA.  It plays GBA games, it is a handheld system, it is released by Nintendo.  How can it not be a successor?  Whether they want to admit it, it is a successor to the GBA, though, according to recent news, it may not be the successor to the GBA..

I see, so your thinking that it is going to be backward compatable with the existing library of GBA games? Do you think it's going to have a fast CPU/GPU to allow yet another librabry of GBA games? In that case it would definatly compete with the DS. My question is that if it is going to play existing games, why use a bigger screen to amplify an already (compared to psp) weak screen resolution?  Also why have analouge controls for 500 games that don't support it?
I think Nintendo got freaked out after they seen demo psps' running that they realized they had to do somethiing a little more functional than the DS if they want to continue their dominance in the handheld arena. Why else have they decided to switch their marketing for the DS from a gaming machine to some kind of close range messenging/PDA type device.
In the end I think its a pretty safe bet Sony is going to own this market, atleast until Nintendo makes their next move, which i think will have to be soon, which i also think will have to be more than yet another version of the Game Boy Advance.

Hi,

This is probably a fake. Nintendo will wait as all others in the console market do. Example ? How old is the PS2 ? How old is the XBOX ? How old is the  NGC ? The PS3 is announced for 2006... So why Nintendo will release a new console just after the DS ? As you know DS and PSP are not in competition regarding the pure performance. Anyway, there a thing i can say: I have a lot of fun playing DS games

Jango.

PS: These smileys are really horrible  :?:

I like diablos' Windows analogy.

I'm going to make my own:

Nintendo DS = GBA Version 1.5

Spong has been known to post tabloid-type stuff in the past and there are no other news sources to corroborate their reporting.  I don't believe their article as of now.

I really don't care how many new systems Nintendo releases in a given period of time as long as there are games to play for those systems.

biggreen:  You misunderstood my post.  As I said, I believe there will be a new GBA, but it will be more like the upgrade from GBA to GBA SP (same hardware, but a different shell and improved screen) than GBC to GBA (upgraded hardware and performance).  Therefore, I believe it will be compatible with the current library, as the hardware will not be altered in the revision.

I also believe that SPOnG heard there was a new GBA in the making, and ran with the information, fabricating all their wants for the new platform into a bloated news story.  Their entire article, aside from the event the announcement will occur at and the fact that the announcement will occur, is completely fictional, IMO.

I don't think I misunderstood your post. You just said exactly what I said you said in your post! LOL :?:

That yes, you think the "new" GBA will be backward compatable with the existing line of GBA games. Everything else I said were actually general questions based on your assumption of that (almost rhetorical to get my own thinking across). Then the paragraphs after that were just my own opions based on nothing you said.
Cheers anyway, Like I said I think a new version of the Gameboy, that doesnt add a faster clock, would be beating a dead horse. Also Nintendo better be thinking of more then just gaming prowess ie: MP3 and Mpeg compatability.

I actually believe that Nintendo will release a new machine that will actually compete with the PSP, before the years end and that they will keep producing a few games (more snes ports) and such for the GBA. Why faze out a machine that is so cheap to produce. It'll be like the mini SNES that they sold while they were pushing the N64. I mean the SP, though dated, can't really be improved upon IMO. I think a bigger screen would just amplify the low resolution and make it look disco. The sound is to rough to warrant adding stereo speakers and analogue controls would be like tits on a bull (you could play with them but they wouldn't do much). What else could they add?? Furthermore, who would buy it? certainly not DS owners I'm sure.

And finally, If they did create the GBASPV2.0, that would mean thet they would have the DS, and this new GBA to carry them threw this year, when would they be releasing some actual competition for sony? And wouldn't it then be too late?

 LOL...

Well, I'm glad we straightened that out.
