Until the last couple of software releases I have been using VPC to patch games with no problems, but when running the new versions Windows hangs during patching. I'm running Windows 98 on VPC 7 as I heard this ran the fastest. I have a G5 iMac.
Anyone else had this problem? If not, what are other people using and can anyone offer me a solution (other than grovelling to borrow a friends P.C. which is always the last resort for a Mac user!!).

Edit:
This doesn't happen when patching all games - it seems to be the larger (i.e 64mb) games that have trouble. Bub Bob Revolution for instance was fine, but Mario & Luigi didn't work.

I've found that if I have a ROM to patch on a VPC shared folder instead of on the VPC C: drive, the SC patcher freezes.  With 2.42, this seemed to only happen with GBA games.  Now with the latest versions, I have the problem with all games.  If you are indeed opening the ROMs from a shared folder or drive (Z:, Y:, X:, etc.), try copying them to the Windows desktop so that they are on the C: drive.  You can set the output location to anywhere, even a shared folder, but the source folder must be on the C: (or D: if you have it) drive.

I always just drag clean roms straight to the windows desktop and patch them from there. My output folder is on the C: drive aswell. I have tried increasing the ram allocation for windows 98 to 512mb, but the thing still crashes. Also, it's not just the patcher that's freezing, it's VPC itself.
What version of windows are you running? I might try it out if it's different to mine..

Well if the entire VPC application is crashing, that's a whole different story.  I thought you meant that just the patcher was crashing in Windows.  Can you clarify if you can bring up the task manager or not to quit the patcher?  If the VPC app is crashing, you may want to reinstall the whole app and apply all updates (7.0.2 is the latest).  Then just create a new virtual machine pointing to your current disk image.  I'm using XP Pro and I have no problems other than what I stated earlier: the patcher would freeze and I could quit it through the Windows task manager.

Yes, it's the whole lot crashing - I have to Ctrl-Alt-Delete in OSX to exit VPC. I'll try the VPC update with XP if you've got that setup working. I guess you have to put up with this kind of thing if you try and run a pc on a mac! Thanks

Your OS should be fine.  You shouldn't have to go to XP.  Just try reinstalling VPC itself first.

You were right - i didn't realise there was a VPC update, it did the trick! I think the old one was struggling with tiger. Thanks mate
