If I wanted to update the .dat and firmware do I just put it on the cf card and then it'll ask me about it?

To update the .dat file you need to copy it to your Supercard software program folder, which I think is C:\Program Files\SC by default.  If you did it right, Windows will tell you that you're overwriting a file.  Answer "yes" to the dialog box to overwrite the old .dat file.  Now you have to run your roms through the SC software again to get any compatibility improvements that the new patch may have added.

To update the firmware you need to put the upgrade.scu file in the root (main directory - not in a folder) of your CF card and then put it in your Supercard and start your GBA.  It will ask if you want to upgrade, say "yes".  After the upgrade is complete (do NOT turn off your GBA during the upgrade process), turn off your GBA and delete the upgrade.scu file from your CF card.  If you don't delete it, the SC will ask you to upgrade everytime you turn on your GBA.
