Ok, I am putting together my first pc from scratch. So i dont know alot. But my motherboard came with a manual. I have a mach speed mother board the manual says it's a pt88as/pt8as. Ok i put it in my case that has a 400watt power supply, put in a cpu, put in 512 ram, hooked up my hard drive to the red ide cable 1 postition and cd rom to the white ide cable 2 postition. I'm having problems hooking up my connectors and pin headers. I got the power connector hooked in and my front usb ports, but i'm having problems with the reset switch, hd led, pwr btn, and pwr led. I think that is were the main problem is and i think i'm just hooking them up wrong. I keep hooking them in different ways and then i try to power my system on and the fan in the power supply moves a little then it just stop. So would that be caused by not hooking those items up correctly?

This is my motherboard

My manual shows me this
pwrled
Pin 1---> box, circle, circle

then there in another box labeled jwfp

vccs box, vccs circle
hddle circle, pwrled circle
gnd circle, pwrbtn circle
rstsw circle, gnd circle
nc circle

Now next to both pin 1's there is a box i think that is because this digram is labeled power LED so it's showing me were to put the 2 single pin power led connectors.
But then i have a hddle cord that has 2 pins and also a pwrsw cord, and a rstsw cord. These all have 2 pins so i would hook them into the area were there are labeled then hook the next connector into the gnd spot right next to them. Is that correct?

Any help would help me i have no clue what i am doing????

Hmm...I had a similar problem when I upgraded my mobo. When I hit the power buttor, the fan in the powersupply would only spin a lil like you said. My problem was that I had mounted my motherboard directly to the side of my case instead of using the lifting screws that came with it. As a result, the power wasn't flowing though my mobo properly. I guess you could see if that was it.

Did you get the mobo in combo with the case or did you just update the stuff in a case you already had?

What happens if you HOLD the power button down instead of just pressing it? Not that it should make a diff, but sometimes the power button is supposed to be a switch (meaning once you turn it on it always stays on) wrather than a momentary contact switch (meaning it only blips on for a split second and thats enough to activate the relays and tells the PC to turn on...) - I really cant see why any new mobo would use the first type of switch though, relays have gotten quite reliable... pretty tough to mix up the wires though, not like the switch has a +/- (although the LED's do, they shouldnt short anything if they are wired backwards)

754boy makes a good point, you definitely need to use your mounting pins because otherwise you will effectively short circuit the entire board.

aside from that, it sounds like you may be having a problem with your powersupply. if it isnt the same problem that 754boy mentioned then you may be shorting a circuit somewhere else or you may (like you suggested) have an improper power button (and reset/led) hookup. if its not those things, my guess would be the PSU is shot or perhaps not configured right.

first off, are you in the US or the UK? 2nd, is your PSU rated for your motherboard type? some mobos have different PSU requirements (although they are usually differnt form factors, thats not always the case). the voltage switch on the back (the panel you plug the power cord into) may need to be flipped.

second, did you hook up BOTH atx power cables? there is a 20ping one and a 4pin one. the 20pin one is hard to miss, its at the bottom right of the picture you posted. the 4 pin one is much easier to miss, its about an inch or two above that. both need to be hooked up if you havent done so already.

third, as you mentioned, the power/reset switch and the leds for them can be slightly confusing.

i couldnt make sense of your descrition, but i can tell you the way the pins are usually arranged on a mobo visually

if you have a set of pins where you will be placing the switch and led hookups, it is usually arrange like so:

2X  4X  6X  8X
1X  3X  5X  7X  9X

you can see that the pins will line up vertically rather than horizontally number wise, but you will arrange your hookups horizontally (i.e. on my mobo the HDD led uses pins 1 and 3, not pins 1 and 2)... this may not be the case with your mobo, but the manual should most definitely say what layout you should follow. sometimes the P/N will be hard to follow too, again its usually mobo dependent... in the manual is should designate which pin is positive and which is negative or GND. on the hookup to the button/led you should see the +/- designation.

long story short, be very attentive to the markings on your mobo, your manual, and your hook ups and once thats all setup correctly you can eliminate that as an option.

keep us posted on what you figure out.

You are most likely hooking up the pwrbtn (Power Button) lead the wrong way. On those little black connectors you will notice a tiny arrow representing the start of pin 1. If you have it supposedly hooked up right and it still does not power on for you (fan moves slightly tho) then reverse it. I can almost guarantee this is the problem.
