I tried typing .nds at the end of the file but that did not work. It is a file that I ran through dsbuild it came out with .ds on the end of it but it is a GBA file

Sounds like you don't have extensions visible. Open the folder, open the tools menu, Folder Options. Go to View tab, and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".
