As mentionned here http://www.scdev.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2309, both cables (parallel and USB) are required to re-program SuperPass 2 :!:

You need to re-program SuperPass 2 to customize its firmware with the DS game you insert in the SuperPass slot : normally you do it only 1 time :wink:

Got my superpass2 yesterday.  Don't need parallel cable.  Just plug it straight  into your parallel port!  You do need the included USB cable (power only through USB, sends info through parallel).
