I will say it again . . . Does anyone remember web browsers running on 386s, and Amigas?  The DS has an ARM9 (67MHz) and 4MB ram, plenty of power for the task. (I can remember 486s with 4MB ram and a 500MB HD running Windows and CompuServe, with 9600 BPS modems, lol)  Hmmm, wouldn't a supercard with a 2GB SD serve as a nice size virtual RAM drive? Screen size is a problem, but there are two screens.  Have a look at an open source web browser called Minimo (targets ARM), is at least a good model for working with a small screen size.

I believe a port of VNC (remote desktop) software would be more usefull.  Then you could web browse, IRC, and email all at the same time, remotely.  Also, think how useful it would be to use your PC as a network file system for the DS.  Check out Palm VNC for ARM . . .

Actualy, Win2DS is already a good foundation for a remote desktop.  Why don't you guys see if Bill Blaiklock wants some help?  I would volunteer my C++/ARM experience, but I'm working on a secret project of my own.

I ask you, do you remember what websites consisted of back when 486 computers ruled the world? They were nearly all text based with a few small pictures dotting them. No complex scripts either like php or asp. Websites have changed quite a lot since then.

Let me put it this way... I have a 400mhz Axim X3 overclocked to 530 with 64MB of RAM and I'd rather pull my own teeth out then use that for web browsing. It was slow, the screen size (240x320) was quite ugly. Scaling images down takes at least a bit of processing power and doesn't look incredibly great though it worked on smaller websites with only a few images fairly well.

Now, comparing that to a 4MB 66mhz + 33mhz DS... and I don't have high hopes. As for using the SD/CF cards for page files... I'm not sure how fast the supercard can actually write to their respective cards. I should take out a stop watch and time how long it takes a program like RAIN to save a 256K save file to my supercard. That should at least give some numbers to work from.

I again also feel like comparing possible DS webbrowsing to PSP web browsing. If anyone of you knows someone who has a PSP (or have one yourself) just try getting onlinewith it and it should give you a good idea what to expect.

True.  I don't expect to run Flash, Java apps, and ActiveX on the DS, lol.  Doesn't PHP, ASP and Coldfusion run server side.  Java script is simple.  I think a no-frames web browser downloading >2Mbit is very do-able.  Also, don't forget there is growing support for web content targeting cell phones and PDAs, google, ebay, etc.

However . . .

Heh yes actually it is -coughs-

It was like 4am when I posted that last one ^_^

monaug5

one is Bill Blaiklock  y dont we take Win2DS's source and Sgstairs work together and create the browser so who thinks thats a good idea

bitblt

Yes.  That would be a great project.  Think "thin client" and let the PC do as much processing for the DS as possible.

monaug5

where could i get Win2DSs source code and sgstairs code
are their any links bitbit?? i believe i should add a compition to see who can do it dont you think??

monaug5

i will be putting up a competition to win some things from my site at mofireds so check it out the prize will be released soon i just need coders so if you are a good coder and want to win a mystery prize just sign the guestbook on the site below or email me at: aaronadeniran@aol.com and ill add you to the competition and the competition will be about making a program that can connect internet using wifi and be able to be used on a broadband connection a little like sgstairs current work but it will be totally public u can use win2ds's source code that i will hopefully provide and you can use Sgstair's code that i will provide.

It is open to Uk and USA residents only and i want a real go at it. i will relase the prize soon enough.
