Image 1/2 way down shows back of unit with batt cover off with exposed hole to sl1 pad.
Image about 3/4 down clearly shows sl1 pad labeled as such on bare DS mainboard.

I hope this design lives on to the production units.[/url]

Why did they leave it exposed in the first place?

to reinstate their original firmware when someone returns their ds to the store.

i hope the whole flashme still works ^_^

Stores don't have flashing equipment, do they? If they didn't make the firmware writable with the SL1 short, they wouldn't have had to worry about that. Did they expect to update the firmware after they have produced the DS? Do they use it for the initial flashing?

its so nintendo can easly put the origional firmwear on it not the stores, he is saying after its returned to the stores. Its not just the people flashing it I think it can also be some games can screw it up or something. Anyway this is great news, hopefully they didnt update the lite too much and we can still use the passme2.

I don't think that Nintendo loses much sleep over the DS/GBA piracy issue. They've a massive install base, and the process is a little too complex for the casual gamer.

The remaining exposure of the SL1 point is likely a result of weighing up the convenience vs the damage that the SL1 switch provides/causes Nintendo.

Maybe in the not so distant future they will become a little more concerned, as recently Flashcard's and suchlike are becoming more and more prominently displayed in Akihabara; Japan's electronic heartland... but still, I doubt it.

I don't know, most of the people here (in Tokyo) have absolutely NO idea about piracy in general - the students in my evening classes (at tech companies, no less) have no idea about bittorrent or usenet, let alone DS ROMs and stuff. So for one thing, I don't think piracy is a big issue here in Nintendo's backyard.

Second (and partly as a result of the first point above), I think Nintendo is primarily concerned with console sales, as opposed to games/software. They'll always rack up the numbers in game sales here in Japan as long as they're able to move the consoles, because most people here don't pirate games. Therefore, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if Nintendo didn't bother making the DS Lite any harder to flash at all ...

Who knows, I guess we'll find out soon enough! ;)

I think its just more convenient for the nintendo techs to have that hole.
And, yeah, piracy is known by few and far between.
Computers still aren't really so big over here, maybe that has something to do with it.
But next time you drop in Akiba, you'll see  that more reputable shops (or at least, less disreputable shops) are starting to stock the PassMe devices, the M3 and the Supercard.

Yea I think nintendo uses the sl1 connection to put the firmwear on the ds so its alot easier to do it after its assembled than when its not so their saving more money that way or else they would just hide it.

As noted recently by sony's latest PS3 announcement, piracy isnt the really big issue for console companies - it always requires an expensive device and alot of information to enable those devices.

I am thinking Big N and Sony are targeting more those who sell things that LOOK like the origional but arent even close to the quality they sell, at the same time being bootlegs. examples: fake pressed disks, phony GBA carts, that sort of thing...

To quote a qoute from maxconsole of a Sony rep
QuoteWe want to be completely prepared when we bring PlayStation 3 to the marketplace, Yasuda said. Our No. 1 competition is not other companies but counterfeiters. We want to work with governments to stop this.
conterfeiters, not piracy in general... (people who sell stuff as if it was the origional, and sometimes it even looks like the origional, but its not - most noteably HK gold knockoffs)

Personally I wouldn't bother with it. It's small enough to hold as it is. My fingers will often cramp if I don't hold it by my fingertips like in that photo.

q_armando

It's all about the SCREENS dude !!
Do you think I would bother to get a new DS (when mine is still brand new and perfectly working with flashme v6) just because I fancy the new color or because it's a bit smaller ?
Did you look at those screens  :?:
I wanna tell you this: when I went to get my DS and I saw it side by side with the new GBA SP with the improved display I was almost going to get the GBA SP instead, because the screen it's just so beautifull.
I am so happy that they decided to add it to the DS as well(it was inevitable) that I am sure I am gonna get one ASAP no matter what version  the firmware will be. :D
After all I can try all the junk games on my modded blue DS, the REALLY good ones deserve to be bought......
The DS Lite.....I BADLY WANT ONE!!!!.....NOW :!:  :!:  :!:

Damn right the DS lite looks amazing and those screens !!! This is how the ds should have looked like from the start.
