I know that the compression option causes the compressed rom to have a longer initial loading time, but does it have any other adverse effects?  In-game slowdowns, shorter battery life, etc?

I don't mind the slightly longer initial load times, but seeing all these very strong "USE SAVER PATCH ONLY!!" advices in every guide I see makes me wonder.

shouldn't matter.  during the "slightly slower initial load time" the zipped rom is being unzipped to the supercard's ram, and from there on out, it should perform the same as an uncompressed rom.

It slows loading by something like 25%, but that's it.
