Can you still return you sons DS?  You could also look on eBay for a broken DS for parts.  Get the special Y screw driver and take apart your sons DS and have a good look.  It might be something simple.

No, I can't return it so probably I should take it apart to see whats up with it.....It was the first batch when the DS game out in 2004
