Quote from: "gamekill"What do you mean you can set the Original DS screen brightness higher using the two back holes near SL1????? Only V5 or every1? How can it be done?

Mine is a first-generation Silver DS that came with Metroid Prime Demo.

        :D
off course you can, near sl1 there are another 2 holes, turning around the piece of metal(i dont know the word in english) inside the hole you adjust screen brightness, each hole adjusts one screen, it's quite difficult to get the same brightness in both screens, that's why i haven't changed mine.

I will tell you the ways of modifying brghtness
v1-v4: hardware only. waiting if it's possible to do with a new flashme!
v5: hardware and sofware(flashme lite works just fine) adjusment possible

      To all the Haters out there who made fun of people and thought they were so smart and said that this was not possible when people originally asked this question.  For example this thread http://scdev.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3078&highlight=light+bulb

First off, I have a v3 nds.

I am confused about the metal in the 2 holes.  Is there a metal dial that you can actually turn?   Or do I have to touch the holes with another piece of metal?

Second, if I actually get the ds brightness levels on both screens to be the same, and then power off the ds, when I power the ds back on, will the brightness level remain very bright?

Lastly, will this kill my lcd?  Is there a bulb that lights up the lcd screens?  If that's thae case. will they burn out faster?

The SL1 switch is simply two bits of metal you can bridge with another metal object  to get the ds to allow access to the protected section of the firmware.

I'd assume that when you can enable higher levels of brightness on your ds you will be able to set the level and it will probably be saved in the firmware. So yes.

Im a little skeptical over this whole thing mainly because it was stated that the lcds used in the DS lite were different and custom made compared to the normal lcds. I'm thinking that prehaps they used these better lcds in DS v5's which is the reason that some have the ability to adjust the back lighting. If you could enable the backlight setting i dont think they will burn out faster. They might heat up a bit more but i doubt they will competly burn out just like that, i mean maybe 3 or 4 years but not like that cause your using it a bit brighter

Are the connections in the two holes dials or what... how do you turn them if they are, if not then what are they and how do you use them!?

Regarding the Flashme with 4 brightness settings:

I think it is only possible on the last generation of the old DS.
My gues is that the display is somewhat different in the old versions and Nintendo made a great deal for let's say: 1.000.000 screens and some of them were put in the last generation of the normal DS.

If it's possible to get the brightness setting on old Ds hardware I foresee 2 problems:

1) Washed out image.
2) Lifetime Lightbulb.

But let's wait,  I own a generation 2 DS and hope I'm wrong.

meh my original firmware is V3 :( im so sad....

BTW to check which version you have, just open flashme.nds on your ds and it will tell you your original firmware version

WILL THERE BE A BRIGHTER SCREEN FOR V3? WHO KNOWS?

Here's what Loopy said on gbatemp.net:

Run the newest flashme. If it thinks you have a DS Lite, you're in luck. If not, there's nothing you can do about it, it's not going to work.

Sorry if I come off sounding like an a$$hole. I keep saying the same thing over and over, and nobody wants to listen (not just here, but also on gbadev).

Using the flashme beta won't help. It's the same thing.

Installing V5 firmware before running flashme won't help. You can't trick flashme into giving you more light settings... it doesn't work like that.

It's not your firmware that determines whether your DS is capable of changing its brightness. This is a hardware thing. The DS Lite has a newer power management chip (this is what turns your backlight on and off) which allows multiple brightness settings. Some of the newer "normal" DSes are also being built with this chip. These are shipping with V5 firmware. When flashme runs, it detects whether or not your DS has this new PM chip, and installs the Lite firmware if you do. Loading Lite firmware onto a DS that doesn't have this chip will not do anything for you.

Unfortunately it appears that only the v5 DS and DS Lite will have this ability.  It's pretty cool that it can happen at all, though.  Sadly I have a v2 - just checked my original firmware version with flashme.

I see some people are getting a bit cheesed off with having to keep telling people that unless you have v5 nds, you will not be able to alter your brightness settings because it is not mechanically possible due to our hardware, Please could someone explain why it is possible to alter the screen brightness in Viewtiful Joe, where you have 2 levels of brightness (bright and normal). I Hope someone can answer this.

I belive there are several posts on this very board suggesting Ventful Joe just changes the contrast of the games graphics rather than any "hardware" level brightness. This option is in a lot of GBA games also...

bitblt

Loopy developed FlashMe so I have confidence in the statement made.

Viewtiful Joe doesn't physically change the LCD lamp brightness.  I believe brightness is achieved by programmatically adjusting RGB color intensities.

Apparently we can manually adjust the brightness of any version DS though.  I'm working up the nerve to try.

theduke

I've checked out Viewtiful Joe again and i can now understand how the brightness change has been achieved by adjusting RGB, very good explanation.

I have also had a fiddle with the individual screen adjusters near the SL1 hole, i can't see any improvement over the factory setting, you can make the screens very grey or very flickery but not brighter, my conclusion is that these are to adjust contrast not brightness, very easy to adjust though and you can do it with the DS powered on.

Thanks again for your explanation.

Has anyone figured out how to determine which old style units have the new power management chips prior to buying. I had bought a ds lite and didn't care for the way it fit in my hands. An old style ds with adjustable back light may be a better choice for me.
