Hi newbie question Hope u don't mind.

I have got Supercard sd with kernel 1.6 with patch program 2.51.
So the question is if I update to the latest kernel and patch program,
do i have to update my previous patched roms (patch in 2.51 roms)
with the new patch software? or does the new kernel back compatible
with previous patched roms?

Most people would say that you would have to repatch the roms with the new software. But I NEVER repatch my roms. Just only when I had trouble with them on the old firmware. So to answer your question, yes it is backwards compatible. If your roms were working just fine with the old firmware, then you dont have to bother. But some of the new games, like New Mario Bros., require the new patching software so that all of the features work.
