How do you save using the Supercard for DS, i heard you need a compatible original DS game to do so. This would defeat the purpose of me carrying along only the SC, but have they patched it so it doesn't require a compatible game?

If anyone could explain this in greater detail, I would really appreciate it.

No, you dont need a game unless you want to be able to put your ds in sleepmode (you cant put your ds in sleepmode without a game).
the SC patcher(can be found here in the download section) has the option of saving to the sd/cf. Just right click on the game when patching and set everything to sd or cf, depending on your supercard. Also make sure you have the latest firmware on your supercard, which is 1.62

How the DS saves is also game dependent. For example, Super Princess Peach autosaves after every completed level. Animal Crossing requires a manual save.

Do you need to do a key command like for the GBA or does the the SuperCard save onto the card (if you selected that option from the patcher) automatically?

Everything dealing with DS saving is automatic
