While browsing a shopping mall in the far east, I came across some cheap DS games for sale. When I enquired, the lady told me that my DS would have to be modded to run these games. At this point, I just said it is not and left.

However, the thought's been nagging me ... what exactly does "modding" a DS involve? They also sold pirated GBA carts, which does not need a modded GBA to play.

What were the games being sold on?

A DS cart, a GBA cart?

These games are GBA carts, like those pirated GBA games popular in this part of the world, this time they run DS games.

The "modding" is none other than flashme.

They are usually sold for half the price of an original DS cart here, and its a total rip off if you ask me. The fake GBA carts will have a very dodgy battery backed SRAM for saving, and they will run dry in months, and you are left with no saving function whatsoever.

yeah. satanduck is right. I just (10 minutes ago) got home from a 5 day trip up to K.L. Malaysia (i'm in singapore), and they were selling pirated DS games on GBA carts.. the best price I saw was rm30 (about 9 dollars), but that's still ridiculous... for all the abovementioned reasons.

It was indeed in KL (Sungei Wang Plaza to be precise) that I saw these DS games. Never saw the content of the box, so I was not aware they were carts. Can the batteries not be replaced in these carts? I actually have an old super Mario World cart for GBA that now does not save anymore.

The last time I checked you can get a battery for about RM8 (USD2), probably from the same place you saw the carts, but you will have to solder it on yourself to you GBA cart. At least the last time I checked it was like this.

haha.. i was at sungei wang all last week.. weird.  and yes, you have to solder the battery yourself (but there is a shop i used to frequent in Johor that would do it for me when the batteries would die on gba games)

If they were indeed DS cards, would you really need a modified console?

satanduck

WOW those look REAL!

After reading the chinese article it says you DO need a flashed DS to play those as well...

yeah.. i just saw a whole shop full of those!  they look the same as a real cartridge now.. heh.. still need flashed DS.  the shop kept telling me I wouldn't be able to use the cartridge unless I let them "modify" my DS, and they said it in a cocky way, like they posessed some "hidden knowledge".  I proceeded to show them my sc mini, EZ4 lite, and m3mini.. then they realized i didn't really need their pirated games.
