DSL Firmware Detection: future problems?

I've been talking about this with a few of the people I know online and none of us can seem to reach a reasonable conclusion. The issue is this: most of us know about Mario Kart DS's "detection" of the DS Lites (If you haven't, read http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archi...lite-hardware/ ). I did some searching around on various forums and wasn't able to find any topics discussing that this "feature" seems to go away (at least for me) when you flash your DS Lite. I tested this before and after several times, to check if it was just random. When I put MKDS in my DS Lite, it booted with Mario saying "Here we go" consistently. After the flash, however, it's "yahoo" just like my regular DS. I have only been able to test this on two DS Lites, one from Japan and one from America, but the results are the same.

tl;dr: if there is a way for games to detect DS Lites, this feature seems to go away when flashme is installed.

What do you think on this? If this feature exists, do you think that there will be a new flashme released based on it? Maybe (read: if its real) future games will use this detection for some reason. I don't know.

But wasnt mario kart ds made before the lites, why would it have a feature to detect ds lites?

I reckon its either random if you run it off a flash cart

rocky

When they made mario kart they knew they were making the lite and they just put some extra little things in it.

I think is random period. I got the real MKDS cart and I get both Yahoo!!! and Here we go!!!....and that's on my blue DSPhat  8)

Same here ... I've herad both LONG before I had a Lite.

I believe the special units used the DSLite firmware basis. It might be that they updated it for previous DSphats.

I don't expect much out of this, but who knows?

It has NOTHING to do with your DS/DSLite... it changes based on how far you've progressed in the game. Try it with a blank save, and then with a save that has all the hidden features unlocked.

edit: after all, it even changes the title screen.

Yes the title screen was confirmed, but some people have reported the "here we go!" without any savedata.

That's the way it was for us until we played the game a bit... "Yahoo!" was the "new" sound.

I'm willing to accept that it's just a random thing... me and my peeps can't always be right. To be clear tho, it's not related to DS vs DSL... or FlashMe.

True, it could be random, or as it said it could be due to firmware that is unrelated to DS vs. DSL.

I'm guessing it has something to do with ROM vs CART.

Here is what I tested.

- My current saved game on the Supercard on both DS Lite and DS Classic.
- A FRESH save (no data) on the Supercard on both DS Lite and DS Classic.
- My ORIGINAL Mario Kart on my DS Lite and DS Classic.
- My ORIGINAL Mario Kart's save copied to my DS Lite on the Supercard.

The ONLY time I heard the "YAHOO" was running the ORIGINAL cart on my DS Lite or DS Classic.

So, there you go.  The question is - what makes the ROM different from the cart that triggers the change?

I couldn't live with that question mark... it's random. I booted, started ROM... reset, start, reboot, start... over and over with the same ROM/save. It's totally random. I got "here we go" the most often, but got "yahoo" a few times as well.

Oh well, we're all looking for stuff that isn't there.

Good, we can put an end to the debate! :)

Funny. I tried to reproduce the random senario several times. Let me go into more depth as to what I have and what I'm running.

DS Lite, one o' them dark blue japanese ones, flashed with v7.
Mario Kart DS Cartridge, USA.

I tried booting ~20 times on my DS lite before I flashed it, each time without any change was "here we go".

I just now did 50 consecutive tests on my DS Lite now that it is flashed and it said "yahoo" each and every time.

At work I tested this as well on a coworkers DS Lite, white american edition. "here we go" was the result, but I only tested 5 times.

I refuse to believe this is random, the results are too predictable.

Jinnai

Well personally i don't believe they are random.

For people who get both, it may be based on their firmware. I believe somewhere after the SE Red Mario Cart DS phat release there was a firmware change that intiated this.

This was originally reported by non-flashcart users so i'd have to say it's not tied to the rom or a flashed DS.
