I just got a wifi card that works with the wifi and now Im thinking of flashing my DS. Is there any downside to flashing your DS? Will I still be able to go online when MArio Kart comes out?

Thankin advance for any response

hi.

There are no technical downsides to flashing your DS, however, we cannot be 100% certain that it will not have some effect on future network play.

However, Because a passthrough device (like passme) is needed to run "Flashme", and a passthrough device is relatively inexpensive, It seems kind of unlikely that Nintendo would seek to penalize those who flashed their firmware.  (being that a passme is easy to come by, and that flashme is SECONDARY to having a passme)

Just in case, I am not going to flash my firmware until after Nintendo's wifi network service launches this Fall, and I can be certain that flashme works with it;  or until i can be certain that it is possible to restore original firmware.

Yeah I am not flashing it for the same reason, just like with people who flashed their XBOX bios, instead of using a removable modchip... they now can't use XBOX live!

My modchip has an off switch :)
...tho I bunged in a old 40gig HDD so I still cant use live   8)

NT

The original firmware can be flashed back to the DS.

Hmm you think it unlikely Nintendo will penalize you, you seem to forget their attitude with the SNES / NES Imports and anything else that infringes their copyright like ROMS!

I'd say it's highly likely the Big N will change their DS carts to pickup on the flashed firmware so they won't run at all on flashed DS's - I know this is as much speculation as yours !

I'm not going to speculate on the network play, of course like with Xbox Live there's always alternatives, like xlink

I was wondering, is it posible to backup the DS firmware before you flash it ? then you could restore your DS should Nintendo do something like this ?

Well, apparently Nintendo is modifying their official firmware to exclude passthrough devices, so let's just see how that affects flashed firmware.
