What does the battery in my SCminiSD do for me?

Besides putting that annoying item at the top of my menu whenever I reboot after playing a GBA game, what does the battery in the SCminiSD do? NDS games save directly in realtime, and GBA games save directly with a button combo (that's awkward as hell on a DSL). I guess the yellow circle under the purpple plastic looks trick, but it seems pretty superfluous and basically an annoyance to me. Am I missing something?

Yeah I'd like to know too.
Some said it's purpose was to simplify the use passme 2nd gen.
And passme 3rd gen came out at the same time...

Buyin' it, I though it was for saving in GBA games avoiding the button combo.
But it's not.

Yea using the second gen passmes, if you used a supercard sd or cf, you would have to put the sram into the card using GBA mode, then quickly turn it off then on to boot DS mode.  Everytime you want DS games, you have to do those steps because the SC CF/SD has no SRAM to back it up, whereas for SC Mini SD you could do it once and never do it again.

It just preserves the sram data for longer than a normal supercard.
