It is because .scu are only incremental upgrade ( only part of the firmware is changed ) and  .bin are full firmware installation.
using an .scu after anything that isn't official or an older firmware coudl cause problems.
I'll try Official 1.7 tonight.

i think the 1.7 sent to arcc is the same version of 1.7 cuz nothing changed after i installed it. files still lists backwards.

The 1.70 firmware sent to arrc is indeed the same as the one released today.  The MD5 sums below prove this:

firmwareLITE170.bin

As I feared our tools don't work anymore with 1.70 Firmware, time to mine into this new file !

The good news :
Something starts at 0x4c000 in firmware 1.70
The bad news :
It does not look like a AGB, a PNG or anything I know, and therefor, I don't know how long it is

With the new logo ( which isn't exactly like the one sent to arcc ) if it was injected as AGB, we should saw a lot of a certain value, giberish, 00s, giberish, 00s, giberish, a lot of other values. I didn't see a such patern so far.
We could really use the expertise of Dr.Katts.
Could he give away it's source of the 1.63 Patcher ?

using supercard SD and MiniSD, I upgraded to v1.7 just fine, and I was also able to downgrade back to directly v1.63 without any problems.

I have not tried it with a supercardlite though.

Zoink

btw, I also experienced my files getting corrupt when I first upgraded to v1.7

After I upgraded to v1.7 and decided to go back to v1.63 by running the 163 bin file, I got a white screen and it bricked my sc minisd. (both screens now have white screens)

When I checked my 163 bin file in windows, it says the file is corrupt.
so I reformat my card, and installed a fresh 163 bin file.

But first, I had to recover my bricked sc minisd using swap method.
After the recovery and firmware is back to v1.63, I went ahead to upgrade to v1.70 again and making sure my 163bin file is not corrupt, I ran the 163 bin file to start the downgrade from v1.70 to v1.63... and now downgrade is ok.

So for my personal experience, v.170 to v1.63 can be downgraded directly. Aside from the SC minsd, I have also tested this on 3 supercard SD.

Have not tried it with SCLite yet though.

Yeah, sorry. I put up a warning now for other users. I was off being a D&D geek yesterday, so never got a chance to mess around with the new firmware yet.

Swap method or Wifime method will unbrick your card. If you don't have access to either another flash cart that can run flashmp.nds or compatible wifi, there are people on the forum that can help you out.

Am I right in thinking that if your friend or you have used flashme then the DS will be wifime compatible, I have an older Phat DS so used wifi me to flash mine rather than use a super key / pass me - just in case that bricker ever slips into something I use !
