Is Supercard for me?

Hey everyone!

I've been skimming through this forum and see some pretty interesting discussions. I am, for the most part, impressed with the Supercard, as it seems to do exactly what I would want it to do.

However, I pine when I think that I may invest in something that isn't for me.

I would be eternally grateful if someone would lay to rest my worries. My needs are rather simple:

a) GBA ROM playback - this would probably entail mostly RPGs (Kingdom Hearts, FF, Zelda, Castlevania, et al.)

b) Simple movie playback - a "watchable", battery-efficient movie playback function. What I mean by this is, contrary to PSP, lasting at LEAST as long as a movie does.

c) Not too crazy JPEG playback

As for the slow-downs, are they noticeable? Like HOW slow? I remember playing NES games on the PlayStation (the first one) and cringing at how slow the games played back.

Also, I'm planning to get this bundle:

http://www.hopebuy.com/0001/0303/219215.htm

Is that a good price/bundle? I do not have any CF readibility with my PC. As I understand, the CF Reader is for PC-to-CF connectivity, right?

I own a DS, so I am also wondering about how it works with that.

I know I probably deserve a few eye-rolls from you as it is, but I was wondering what formats the Supercard supports. I've done alot of video/audio conversion/compression, so the more details, the better.

Anything else I should be concerned of? I'm rather paranoid, because I was seconds away from purchasing the EZ Flash II, but decided to do a bit more research. Stupid me, failed at first to see that 256 Mbits IS NOT MBytes. So, that really turned me off. Call me a megalomaniac, but I like having multiple games on ONE cartridge.

One final question: Should I buy now or wait for something? A new upcoming Supercard? I'm rather paranoid in THIS regard, because only a few weeks after getting my iPod, I found out Apple went and released iPod Photo. Pissed the living $hit out of me. Excuse my French.

Anyways, thank you in "advance" (excuse the Gameboy reference). Hope to join you all in the Brotherhood of Supercardism.

yes all those rpgs work fine. i have tested them all.

it lasts like 6 hours or so? which isnt as long as the ds normally lasts, but the supercard uses more battery power. but yes its fine for watching movies or doing whatever.

playing jpegs is easy.

the nes games have zero slowdown from what i cant tell. its pretty perfect.
the sega master system and gameboy all seem fine as well.

yes that bundle is good, i would reccomend a 1gb card, and yes the reader is for pc connectivity, and as for price, i dont know. u may be able to find a better price elsewhere for the cf card, but i dont know.

yes i use mine with the ds, its fine. its actually better due to the the fact that the audio is better and the screens are higher resolution.

it supports pretty much every format, the software converts it anyway. u have to have the codecs and whatnot installed though to have them encode. and let me just say that i used to encode and subtitle anime for video groups, and if u know anythign about video, you will be dissapointed with this conversion software. its really crappy and made for peopel who dont know how to encode shit. u cant adjust hardly anything at all. your best bet is to use only high quality stuff to begin with so it doesnt come out looking like crap.

"stupid me, failed at first to see that 256 Mbits IS NOT MBytes. So, that really turned me off. Call me a megalomaniac, but I like having multiple games on ONE cartridge."  i dont think u understand.... the cf card that u use with the supercard IS IN FACT megabytes. so yes u CAN use multiple games. i have like a TON of nes roms and movies and mp3s and gba roms on mine. i have a 1gb card. thats one of the best things about supercard. is the built in 256megabit is ONLY for its memory.... which is more than enough. the storage is actually the cf card which IS megabytes.

as for buying it now??? i bought mine within 15mins of finding out it existed, and i already owned the other gba video player. in my opinion its worth every cent. its awesome. u cna use it for music, movies, pictures, text, gba games, nintendo games, gameboy games, sega master sytem games, and gamegear games.i use it more than i do my DS games. and i doubt there will be a newere supercard anytime soon... but who knows...

hope that helped some... im kinda drunk btw, so pardon my spelling errors.... later

I believe he was refering to the EZ Flash II, seam.

Definitely buy from HopeBuy (it's where I got mine). You can buy the CF card separately if you want, as you may be able to get it cheaper.  However, that's not a bad deal, and the CF card is great quality (I have it as well as the Ultra II version, and both are excellent).

Alright, guys, you've made me a believer. Time for a new gadget investment... muahahah!

:D

Glad to hear we have another person that will soon be enjoying the wonder that is the SuperCard. :D

I was really worried about ordering one as well (is it right for me, how does it compare to other flash cards, is the compatibility good, is it a good deal, will it damage my GBA, et cetera).  But as soon as the PayPal payment was sent, I was giddy as a schoolgirl, and I've yet to resume my normal demeanure.

Someone on another forum said that there is an SD card version of the Supercard in development, but this is just a rumor.  So it is possible that a newer version will come out soon if the rumor is true.  An SD card version would likely have better battery life and the card may not protrude at the bottom like the CF card does.

Diablo

Question asked yesterday on the Official SuperCard Forum:
QuoteAre there any plans to make a SD version of the super card? This would keep the memory card from sticking out of the GBA/SP/NDS.

Romman's response today:
QuoteIt"s really a good idea. Many people have SD cards, SD are widly used on PDA, DC, etc.

Evidently, Romman didn't even know about the SD version in development.

He does seem willing to entertain the idea, though...

I'm getting conflicting information about whether the Super Card will fit in the NDS. http://64scener.com/gba/suprcart.htm has a nice review, but they specifically say that the cart won't fit since it lacks a groove on one side (but you could probably dremel it I guess.)

Also, I emailed http://www.kicktrading.ca about it and they also said it doesn't fit but they expect a new model next week.

http://www.supercard.cn/eng/index.htm has some pics of a yellow model that has the card edge sticking out and working in a NDS.

But you guys say it DOES work???

Is this the same model that those websites show? Or is it a newer one?

And whats the best and cheapest distributor in the US? I saw on the pole that hopebuy.com was used by most, but their website is borked right now, can't order anything or get info on the SC.

Thanks!

According to the Official SuperCard site:
Quote- Question:  Does Supercard support NDS?
- Answer:  Yes. All version of Super Card support GBA, GBA SP and NDS.
The design of the SuperCard has changed since it debuted.  The original design needed to be slightly modified in order to physically fit in the Nintendo DS.  The redesigned version worked in Nintendo DS units straight from the box (this redesign is not the yellow SuperCard, but a redesign that involved only modifying the outer case to allow use with the Nintendo DS).

Now, as far as I'm aware, that information is accurate.  If it is not, please feel free to correct me.

As for purchasing the SuperCard, I'd buy it from HopeBuy.  That's where I got mine, and I, too, live in the US.  It cost $66.90 in total (PayPal charge, the SuperCard, and shipping), and came 4 days after I ordered it via DHL delivery.

BTW, the HopeBuy site is working fine for me.
