My daughters DS phat had on a cheap screen protector (bought it used) and the top screen has glue around the edges. How can you safely remove it?

Gluegone(sp?). I used it on my SP and it took all the crap off in 10 seconds.

I've heard you can remove glue with an eraser (pink tip on back of pencil is best). Although, I'm not sure if it works on a screen other than plastic. If that doesn't work, use a soft cloth with some warm water to melt the glue off, but make sure it's not dripping wet.

a lil bit of alcohol works great too, i use it everytime i need to change the bottom screen protector from my kids nds.

I bought some screen shields off eBay once, they were practically soaked in some vile gluey ****. 'twas hell getting it off, I used a TINY bit of white spirit diluted in warm water on a cloth.

For anyone in the UK i suggest getting the screen protectors with the 'Gameware' brand from any 'Game' store. I know they're a terrible retailer, but they are the best screen covers I have seen. Expensive, but then I've never needed to replace them, and they're easy to apply without bubbles.
