hey guys.. i have been into the ps2 and gamecube scene for a long time, but just managed to grab a used xbox for a ridiculously low price, and was wondering if any of you are well-versed in xbox soft-mods?

I am even more interested in running emulation off the hard drive than in running backups.  what would you recommend?

meangreenie

There is really easy way to mod that box without even touching a screw... but you need/borrow a memory card and the 1st xbox splinter cell game (original). Also if you know someone with an already modded xbox, it will make it even easier.

Do you have any of those things ?
Yes I'm mad

I am versed in chipping and replacing hard drives not soft mods.  I use the xecuter 3CE and. If you decide this path instead of soft modding, let me know.

NES and SNES run fine N64 is patchy sometimes.

i have none of those things, but i can get them (memory card, and exploitable game)

meangreenie

Do you have access to an already modded xbox ?

Otherwise you will have to make a cable from an usb extension lead, which you splice into the xbox controller wires.... this maybe a route you don't want to take.

Another option is to 'hotswap' into the xbox hard, and mod it that way (for this you only need a pc, but you will also need to unscrew you're xbox to get acces to the xbox hard drive) ... plus not everyone likes the idea of hot plugging the ide lead while the pc and xbox are on, I have done it though a few times and had no problems.

edit.. if you were not so far away, I could just send you a mem card with exploit save files already on it and splintercell to borrow.

with that (mem card/splintercell) would i be able to mod mine?  I could pay for shipping/return shipping if that's all i need... i'm not too far away, if you live in the u.s.a.  i'm zip code 96701

meangreenie

Other side of the pond in the UK.

And yes that would be all you need, apart from my PAL copy of Splintercell would not work on you're NTSC xbox.

I don't mind sending the mem card, but would like it back.. so the shipping might make it not very cost effective, plus you would need to hire/borrow/buy a copy of Splinter Cell NTSC.

What would be better, is someone in the U.S to do it.

The procedure is really simple.

1) put mem card with exploit saves in controller

2) boot to the standard xbox dash and use the memory manager to copy the save files from mem card to xbox hard drive

3) boot splinter cell and load the gamesave.... and then you're in, follow on screen instructions to install complete mod.

that sounds super easy.. would you be able to point me to the correct exploit saves?  if I don't know anyone with the exploit, would action replay allow me to copy the exploit to a mem card somehow?

meangreenie

yes, yes it would

goto irc #xbins ... download krazies ndure 1.1 for splintercell NTSC (or any the other 2 exploitable games.. OO7 and mechassault

Use action replay to copy the hacked saves to mem card.   (this can be bypassed as I mentioned earlier if you already have a mem card and hack an usb extention cable and splice it into the xbox controller lead... tuts here-> http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showforum=44) .. to get the hacked save files onto a mem card.

A USB cable, an xbox extension cable and standard usb memory stick can also be used.

check out www.xbox-scene.com

I've softmodded a few, dead simple - read the guides.

Emulators rock on the xbox, snes, nes, md (genesis) + CD, gg, sms, PCE + CD, NEO GEO, Mame, CPS1+2 :-)

not to mention Amiga, st and all home computers prior to PC's

yes n64 could be better (like on PC)

How would you upgrade the Hard Drive after a softmod?

Can you softmod a 120gig Xbox?

Thanks

Mikey

meangreenie

@mikeypr.. yes, but you have to configure the drive on you're PC with XboxHDM (see xboxscene), and it has to be locked with the correct key, which is unique to you're particular xbox.

To get the key you have to get the box into a modded state and run a backup utility, the gamesave installers (krayzies packages) have this facilty as does various xbox apps.

Once the key (eeprom.bin) is got, you will need to get it to you're PC, most do this by FTP, though it can be written to the mem card and retrieved that way.

Cheers, I already have a X3 Pro modded Xbox, so it should not be too much of a problem,  I just want another Mediacenter. Love it.

Thanks for the help.

Quite easy actually, get xbox hdm, copy your drive contents into folders inside this (C E F ( G if you want one)), put a copy of your xbox rom in there and run xbox hdm which will make a bootable Linux DVD.

Put new HD in PC, boot linux CD / DVD you made, it will format it, copy the stuff and then lock it using the copy of your rom.

Turn off pc, move disk from PC to Xbox - and you're done :-)

of course make sure you get a disk which is lockable, for an 80gb disk I can recommend the hitachi deskstars - done 4 of them no prob - quite quiet, no temp probs :-)

google for a list of xbox lockable hd's
