I have been and always will be a hardcore Nintendo fan and couldn't be happier with my DS but the PSP is beginning to intrigue me.  I've been looking on IGN quite a bit lately and there seem to be a few games worth owning.

How easy is it to run emulators off of?  I love the idea of potentially having a portable N64 on my hands.

Best Buy has the Entertainment Pack with a free game and free shipping right now.  I'd just turn around and sell the game on ebay (NBA '07, meh) but it seems like a decent deal.

So...should I get a PSP?

lordhell

surely you should buy one!
i buyed one about 2 weeks, and it have great games, like locoroco, megaman marverick hunter x, killzone, burnout legends and etc...
i love my ds and my new psp, they have great games.

Thundrestrike

definately get one. I love my psp games and homebrew!
BUT:
DO NOT BUY A NEW PSP FROM ANY STORE.
ALL NEW PSP'S ARE NOT HOMEBREW COMPATIBLE.

Buy a Firmware 1.5 PSP to use homebrew, and install a custom firmware called 2.71 SE-C.
Your best bet is ebay for a 1.5

The PSP is the XboX 1 of handheld homebrew, it's simply the best. Regular game wise, well it sucks big ones. Like someone said LocoRoco is bad ass and alot of fun, and KillZone is great too, and don't forget Virtua Tennis and Power Stone, but other then those games the PSP is SORELY lacking in quality fun games. I honestly turn my PSP on about once every 2 months or so.

Ive had both a DS and a PSP and I have to say the DS is the winner in terms of games.

In my opinion, the PSP is at best, OK for playing games. The only game I bought for it was Ridge Racer which was quite good. I did download a lot of the demos, LocoRoco is fun but none of them tempted me to buy any of them.

In terms of doing other things, the PSP comes out on top mainly due to it's "out of the box" ability to play movies, music and browse the internet.

I don't care particulary care much for looks, but I understand 90% of people shop with their eyes. I think that given the original DS (phat) and PSP, people would kill one another for a PSP but with the advent of the DS lite, things seem much more even.

One factor I do care for is robustness. I've seen countless instances of PSPs which are bricked following a failed firmware upgrade or have broken screens, UMD doors and lasers, which dwarf the faults of the DS. Here's a video I like to use when deeply engrossed in "PSP vs DS" discussions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNNNwK2XMzk

My final verdict... well, let's just say my PSP did quite well on Ebay.

I appreciate all the info.  After reading all of your comments, I think I've decided to wait until a price drop.  The DS w/SCL is all I really need right now as far as portable gaming goes.

When it comes down to it, how much do I really need to play N64 games on the go?...not a whole heck of a lot.  After getting the 360 and Wii within the past 3 months, I suppose I should probably focus on those for awhile.  There are way too many great 360 games I should be buying instead of giving $250 to sony.

Good choice! I dislike Sony. :(

Thundrestrike

You are not alone, almost all PSP owners hate sony's guts.

As for a price drop...
I got a PSP + Game + USB Cable + Battery + AC Adapter + 256 Memstick
....all for only $150 buy it now!
Then I bought a 1gig for $30 and downloaded ~30 games

And not to mention - The PSP has the best homebrew scene.
SOOOO much! N64, SNES, NES, games, apps, and way, WAY more!

The PSP is finally starting to come around in terms of games.  I really like Killzone and Ace Combat.  If you can only afford one system, obviously a DS is the answer, but I see no reason not to get a PSP if you have the cash and like the games that have come out recently.

If you get one I also recommend a 4GB memory stick.  They can be had for well under $100 and open up a lot of possibilities.

I think the PSP and DS go hand in hand when you aren't paying for games :P

Ds has the games. 8 times out of 10 the DS wins hands down in that front. The few exceptions being some absolutely sloppy DS ports in comparison with their PSP variant (Lego Starwars for example). Also DS homebrew seems better geared to functional apps such as dsorganise. Ds does suck big ones when it comes to emulation however. The PSP has fullspeed emulation for GBA, Snes, Megadrive, PS1 (the sony emulator which SHALL somehow play isos when cracked) plus arcade wonders such as CPS1 and CPS2. N64 emulation is also forever making progress.

Both handhelds deserve to be owned. Buy a 1.50 PSP (or any downgradable PSP) and take advantage of buy.com's 4gb sandisk memory stick offer for $65.

Sony may be utter losers in the console market atm, but I'm glad they tried to show off with a powerful handheld.

Don't wait for a price drop, as a new machine will be absolutely useless to you with later firmwares. I stress the words ABSOLUTELY USELESS. Not just a little useless.

...Bummer.  I might consider buying a PSP, but only if I can get it new.  A used system that's known for having bad pixels *out of the box* is too big of a risk for the $500 I'd wind up spending (including accessories, like battery packs)

kyus

No. You can buy a new system from ebay with 1.50 installed. ANYTHING 2.71 or under is downgradable, excluding the annoying ta-082 motherboard psps.

Battery packs are unnecessary. I bought an unofficial 2600mah battery, and the PSP had trouble with it (random shutdowns, screwed up emulators etc) and he batery pack the console comes with is more than worthy and the ONLY accessories you need to buy are a memory card (I recommend the $65 4gb card as I said) airform case and nothing else. You can fit tons of games onto that memory card.

All you'll end up spending is around $230 at most. If you need help finding a true bargain or a trustworthy source for the console, I'll be very willing to help you search.

Also dead pixels are no longer an issue with the psp. Please stop believing fanboy opinions of the console and allow me to point out that there isn't one major annoyance with mine.

Altor

So the loading time, 4 hour battery life, and the mere existence of the UMD format don't annoy you at all?  :)

It's good to hear that the bad pixels were mostly a first-run issue, but the only condition under which I would consider buying a PSP is if I could get battery packs with better longevity (10+ hours minimum)... so I'm still on the fence.

bitblt

I think the batteries last a little longer if you aren't using the UMD drive.  ;)

I'm really looking to get one of these suckers, too... I gave the gp2x a shot, actually really liked it, but sold it quickly for actually quite a decent profit.
