You can get away without the rails (if you're careful and don't move the PS2 !

Thanks for all the help.  It's a lot clearer now... except for this rails thing.  RAILS??!  Huh? :|

The official Sony hard drive has metal rails that let you slide it into the expansion bay. I stole some from my old Sony drive. I don't know what you do if you don't have them. Someone else probably does. :)

well..most hdd are pretty snugly fit inside..you shouldnt be moving your system around while playing a game anyways.  the "rail" is basically a case for the smaller s0ny hdd so it wont move around in the ps2 expansion bay.  you should avoid buying western digital drives for hdloader because the some forsaken reason the pin placement is different from standard hdd.  that means the network adapter plugins wont line up with the hdd which = cutting up your network adapter to fit the damn thing.  most ppl just do the memory card exploit cause its easy and cheap...you cant play ps1 games but the ps2 compatibility is pretty high.  theres a pretty comprehensive list on ps2hd.com (shameless self promotion :P) although the site was down for a time so the newer games are not updated as of yet.

I have never used "rails" and my maxtor 250GB drive has been fine for a couple years in there...  just in case you are worried about it.

Hi

You could always just play ps1 backups on the computer with an emulator though... right? So why get a modchip.

But don't trust me   Seriously. I live in the world of nds piricy and no nothing about anything else.
