Background
Just today, my replacement DS Lite unit arrived. I plugged in my SCLR with SK and it appeard to work normally. I loaded up Elite Beat Agents and turned up the volume only to find the sound on the left speaker was louder than the right, other symptoms mentioned below. Flashing the DS Lite (European unit) did not help.

Symptoms
You turn on your DS Lite and experience the following:
  • Unbalanced volume (the left speaker is louder and clearer).
  • The right speaker generates "pulsing" static noises (similar to when using headphones).
  • "Rustling" noises can be heard if you move the top lid (or if you apply pressure).
Likley cause
The speakers inside the DS Lite are connected to the main copper cable by regular cables. The cables leading to the right speaker runs just underneath the top screen and is held in a groove with tape. If this cable (red and black) is not seated properly, I believe it will cause the above symptoms, i.e. either the plastic housing rubbing against the cables causes noise or it is due to the interference from the screen.

Solution
Probably the easiest solution would be to return the product, but I presume this only applies if the problem didn't arise from your own tampering. The other solution would be to take off the top panel and reseat the cable yourself.

I hope you've found this useful. Remember, this hapenned on a (presumed) new unit straight from Nintendo, it just shows that defects happen more often than not.
