Do you think that someday, it will be possible to copy VC...

games? For example, the same way we dump ROMs, do you think it will be possible to do the same with the VC games and share them through SD cards?

I think it could be possible, but I believe VC games are tied to your wii registration number? Thats also how the wii shop channel identifies your system, your account etc..

Nintendo knows exactly what you download so I would guess (like any other hack for it) you would need to make sure your Wii doesn't connect online or take firmware updates. Nintendo already killed the Wii Shop internet surfing hack with a firmware update.

ah so that was their "parental control" update, it was just a ruse.

the kind of hack we need is not to be able to copy the VC games. but instead to let clean roms run from an SD card. I'm talking the VC roms ... NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, and TG16. I'm not talking Wii games ... Nintendo et al. should make money on the new games. It's the games from 1986 that I'm not too hip on paying for AGAIN. (yeah, I'm that old)

As far as I know, the downloaded VC game is locked to your system using your friend code.  If we can find a way to edit the friend code within the file, then it might be possible to share games, so long as the Wii isn't connected to the internet.

The other thing I noticed is that the actual game sizes seem fairly big - Solomons Key for example takes up around 2.5Mb, whereas the clean NES rom probably only takes up less than 50kb.  I'm guessing that the 'emulation' software is not actually built into the Wii, but included in the downloaded file.  Technically, this means that VC games take up more room than they need to...

If I had the time, it'd be interesting to compare a downloaded VC game to the original clean ROM (using a HEX editor), and look for similarities.  But I don't have the skill to do that!

I can see where you're coming from Hanafuda...£3.50 for a NES game is a bit steep imo - <£1 would've been more appealing.

There were some VC games posted on usenet that work/worked until one of the updates killed them.   You can run snes/nes eumlators though now.

If you don't want to pay for them don't play them. If they want to re-sell old games it's there choice.

$6, $8, and $10 are a total rip off for these games, and I'll never buy the first one.   If they were $1, $2, and $3 I would buy a bunch, or if they were at their current price level and had 100% support for the wii remote, I might buy a few, but very few.

I bought Ristar on a random impulse... I'm a little sad though.  One of the game's main life-or-death things involves you holding down one button for anywhere up to 30 seconds (for instance, to grab a floating seed to get a ride on the first level)... well it seems the wiimote's bluetooth occasionally loses a packet or two, and you're constantly letting go!  Sigh...

I had this idea how VC games could be ripped, BTW.  I'm no expert, but I know a few things.  Would it be possible to download a VC game on one console, then download the VC game on another console, and use a hex editor to find what is different between them?  Presumably, everything but the lockout code and a small handful of other things should be identical.

Jesus Christ! Someone PLEASE tell me where to order an SD to GC adapter!

Oh yeah. And the VC games are super encrypted. We've tried comparing the same VC in a hex editor with no luck. I think there was some stuff that was different... but when modified it didn't work. :(

What I'd try to do is isolate the portions that CAN'T be directly copied, then.  Take chunks of the file from one VC program and paste them into the other, see if it runs.  Continue until you find a block that can't be done, make a note of it, and continue.  When you've got a full tally of sections that can't be copy-pasted, divide those sections up into smaller sections and see what parts can't be copied, etc.  Yeah, a lot of work, but if you want to be famous for figuring out how to pirate (eh, back up...) VC games, put a little effort into it! :P

Heh, I guess there's a guy with not only ideas like me, but he actually has time on his hands:
