There is a problem with Movie Converter. DivX movies converted to .gbm are  corrupted if played with FilmPlay.gba. Mystically, during the the conversion process the frames of the movie showed in tiny window are in perfect shape.

Is it codec problem? Can I update converter codecs?

Use the old movie coverter....version 1.30. I had the same problem until someone here told me to try that one. Hope it works for you

1.40 does the trick. But 1.50 encodes using the Crystal Engine thing which doesn't work in FilmPlay.bin, only the GBS, but the picture gets all messed up.
