Came out today in the UK, seems to be ok for PAL60, no borders/slowdown I can see anyway...

Nice, hope it's heading Stateside soon then as that's a must have purchase.

I'm probably one of those strange poeple that preferred Diddy Kong Racing on the N64 than the official Mario Kart 64.

However, I do have the Game Cube version, which is really fantastic and worth buying on Platinum or buying a 2nd Hand one.

NT

I'm pretty pumped about this.  I hated the N64 controller, so I'm looking forward to playing with the Classic controller instead.

Eww... Mario Kart double dash was the worst entry in the series. It's still a good game... but when you compare a good game to it's great cousins, you can't help but be disappointed. Like a son who gets into Brown while his two older brothers made it to Yale~

No slowdown, but there's a speed issue with 2 maps - try multiplayer on the Bowsers Castle level and see how fast it runs!
Another map is a tad too fast aswell, but I can't remember which one :D

That's because the game was never meant to be run at 60Hz ie 17.5% faster than the official UK PAL N64 release.

I can appreciate that, but why does it only affect x2 maps?  You'd have thought that Nintendo would've done more extensive playtesting - I mean, what a PITA having to switch down to 50Hz every time I want to play...

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of the VC, but when you're spending £7 on a 10 year old game, only to have to p**s around changing settings in order to get it working correctly, it doesn't seem worth the price.

I have to say from when I bought the SNES and Megdrive I have always bought US consoles and played them on my UK TV which obviously is NTSC compatible.

Knowing that PAL consoles and games had the old problems of borders top and bottom and ran 17.5% slower, as a console gaming fanatic there was only one choice for me.....BUY AMERICAN!

I still do this today.....I have an American Nintendo Wii right now....

I also believe from what I'm told, the UK PAL VC games on Wii suffer from the problem of borders top and bottom due to true emulation of the original consoles....

This doesnt effect the US/Japanese versions at all....

I hope for UK PAL Wii owners that this can be changed for all UK VC games.

But as normal UK PAL console owners always get stiffed.....

Nintendo have also PAL60'd Mario 64 + Donkey Kong Country but not for eg Street Fighter + megadrive/pc-engine games. So hopefully it seems they're fixing the big titles, that suits me since its all I'd be buying anyway...

ratx

I read there was an update to Mario Kart on virtual console and indeed if you browse to it in the shop you get an update. Apparently there is a bug if you leave the old version running on the char select screen. No idea if this applies to the NTSC version..

I agree, quite sad to see people say it's too fast when it's running the speed it should do!

So the Million £ question, If I import a US Wii, can I connect it to my internet connection and play online and get online content or will it not let you ?

Yes I know I'd be forced to buy USA games but seriously nintendo never get the pal thing right, PS2 is lousy as well.

Dreamcast was a good start - most games had pal60, Xbox was a breath of fresh air (as is 360) with regards to pal.

I had all USA imported 16bit and 32 bit consoles (even 64bit - n64). Thing is reading the technology it's about cheap and shoddy pal implementations, as yes 50hz is slower but there are ways around this - and borders - thats just poor!

still maybe nintendo want to give uk games the same experience they had on the VC - and not allow them to play the games as they were meant almost 20 years after they didn't let you play them properly the first time!

Ok - steam vented - I feel better - thank goodness handhelds don't have this problem!

Buying US does mean you need a step-down AC from 240 to 110 and they aren’t too expensive. Although the Slimline PS2 only needs a new UK figure 8 cable and UK plug as its multi-voltage so at the cost of £5 or less and your sorted.

But with the Wii the only downside is the Weather Channel which will only give you regional weather for US and Canada. And the news channel has similar localised news for the same reason. Although you can look up international news and weather via the FREE internet browser which makes the two channels totally irrelevant

As for Wii Virtual Console. well you cant buy with your debit or credit card as it recognises UK credit cards and therefore wont let you. But this isnt a problem. All you do is buy Wii Points and away you go! Which to be honest isnt a bad thing just a bit annoying.

Other than that, games from the US cost abot £10 less than buying them retail over here which costs roughly £30 brand new delivered to your door AND usually takes about 4 working days to come all the way from Canada http://www.videogamesplus.ca which is most impressive!

oh and another point to make, games always come out faster in the USA way before Europe! So that really makes up for slight hassle of NTSC consoles!

dai_uk

So other than the news and weather there really is no problem with an imported wii.

Does the USA wii do RGB as I seem to remember the Cube wasn't RGB in USA but was in Europe

The borders were almost guaranteed if they wanted to keep the system within the PAL standard display. The PAL display has more lines on the screen, and most games are developed from the ground up to be on NTSC displays. The extra resolution would require more ram and more powerful processing to fit the entire image, unless a really poor stretching solution was found which no one would have been happy with.

That doesn't explain why, though, most games don't have an NTSC/PAL switching option. A few games I've seen do have it, but not enough and it leaves me a bit puzzles.
